This is an article about a man named Daniel Tammet, he recently set a new European record when he recited pi to 22,514 digits from memory. He's an interesting kind of autistic savant and may open up new oppurtunities for scientists to underestand autism. He's also gay, but that's not the focus of the article - it actually is only stated that the 'love of his life' is a man called Neil. I thought it was a great piece, so check it out.

I think it's very interesting. I'm glad you posted it. A lady I met that is a patient of my neurosurgeon told me after she had a massive stroke and recovered, that she has really clear memories she never had before.

Carolyn said she described the places she could remember in great detail down to paintings on the wall and flower arrangements on the kitchen table. It turns out she was describing her grandmothers house, that she visited as a very young child, age 1-2 yrs. old. Her grandmother died when she was three and there were no pictures with the things she was able to remember.
The neurologist and neurosurgeon said it's all in there; it's just accessing it that's the problem. She was now able to access an area of the brain she hadn't been able to before.

I've always been interested in what causes autistic people to withdraw into their secret world. I have lots of tendencies to be a bit like David, with the counting and the setting things in numbered rows. It was fascinating to read what he said about himself since most autistic people don't ever speak.

I really liked that quote from Kim Peek ( the guy they fashioned RainMan after). "You don't have to be handicapped to be different...everybody's different." Amen to that.

Do you ever wake up, especially from a deep nap, and not know who you are? You have to tell yourself or maybe look in the mirror? And, after you remember, do you ever feel disappointment that it's just you?

Thanks so much for sharing that article Smile
