Last evening Kevy and I went to our monthly PFLAG chapter meeting and were treated to a seminar volunteered by a prominant local attorney.
The subject was "Dealing with issue #1"
Now issue #1 in ohio is essentially a law passed in the recient november election banning untraditional marriges.
I omit the wording "Gay or same sex" marriges because this law also encoumpasses common law heterosexual marriges.
What the lawyer explained is that even with this horrendous legislation untraditional couples can legaly protect themselves just as traditional couples (with some minor exceptions)
The key is planning and a good attorney.... Wills and trusts can be written to protect jointly owned property. Powers of attorney can protect couples rights in case of emergency or hospitalization.
What it all boils down to is that with a cool head, good lawyer and a small bit of cash (fees) we can protect ourselves as well as any other couple.
