A 1992 film. Touching, gentle, controversial and yet somehow tasteful. http://imdb.com/title/tt0108504/ And a "tough/handsome" male lead.

Saben this may be a useful example for you. It was not set in gentle times and yet it expressed an idealised gentleness. While many people could legitimately argue that the relaytionship was abusive the film is autobographical and cerytainly not viewed by "Jeroen" as an abusive relationship.

It was screened first in 1992, and quite possibly would not have been able to be made in today's climate.
