An intersteing and deceptive picture this chap was very famous in thye UK and his fame may well have crossed to the USA and beyond.

He was normally very dapper indeed. He was reputed to be extremely smart, even to the extent of wearing spats. I recall that it was a great surprise that he was gay. I recall an arrest for cottaging. Not mine!

Okay, I'll confess that I know very little about him, except that I recognised him from the little bits of Steptoe and Son that I have seen.

I certainly had no idea he was gay...

Er... perhaps someone else can be more enlightening.

There's always wikipedia, of course, but I imagine most people round here are aware of it already.
