In my weekend newspaper my eye was caught by an intriguing article which adverstised the fact that a certain Mr Joseph Shipman would be giving a talk on "the influence of balls on plot development in opera". I was even more interested by the fact that he would "illustrate his lecture with his organ". Being an opera buff I was delighted that I might be able to down two birds with one stone (if you will pardon the expression in this context).
You can imagine my acute disappointment when I discovered that "balls" in this context meant "dances" and that the organ was .... well, not the one I had thought Mr Shipman would be using for his demonstration.
But now my interest has been aroused. (Get your minds out of the gutter!) Can any opera buffs out there in APOS-land suggest plots in which balls did influence the development of the action? Enquiring minds want to know. ;-D
The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)
