An easy one for British readers.

Supplementary question. What was his link with TV presenter Richard Whiteley, who sadly died today.

He taught my Best Man!

I suspect the connection is related to that. Interesting that his being a schoolmaster is not going to help the guessing

I thought this was to be about famous gays as in famously worldwide?

Lesser notables limited in exposure kind of limits the playing field don't you think?

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

They can be national or global. The object of the exercise is to show a wide and varied selection of gay people who have been in places of leadership, or who were at the top of or near the top of their craft.

This one has a UK following and was most assuredly at the top of his craft.

Russell Harty who taught Richard Whiteley English at Giggleswick.

May I add my condolences at the passing of R Whiteley, one of the best of human beings.

Hugs

And famous for being a prodigious chat show host, equivalent inhis way to Michael Parkinson.

His major demerit was asking questions such as "You are, are you not, famous for (very long and rambling sentence or 6)?" to which the only real reply is "yes"

He became gradually known as gay through his life. The great thing is that this was before being gay was widel7y acceptable. And it did not matter.
