Sorry about the delay, but I've been out and about for a couple of days.
This is a bit of a cheat because he is bi rather than gay, but those who know my background will recognise him straightaway.

It isn't Sally's husband from Mrs Dale's Diary, is it? He left her and the radio show to go and pursue men!

You're right. It isn't Sally's husband from Mrs Dale's Diary.

Try 1875 - 1955

He never denied his inclination to the gay side of being bi. Two of his three sons were well known for being gay. He also had three daughters.

If need be, I'll give further clues, but that will make it rather obvious.

The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)
