Self-portrait by a very talented American - I've used this (which is stylistically typical) rather than some of the more iconic pix. He was out (many people thought offensively so!) and, alas, is no longer living.

Amazing what a little research will do. I got there with google. I know who he is, but I've never knowingly seen his picture. I've seen lots of stuff about him though.

Most of the well-known selfportraits are in explicit costume (as this one is - but the "gymnast" pose is fairly inoffensive) ... although some would be suitable for this website, one or two of them would not.

One of the exhibitions of his work I've been to was at the Hayward Gallery a few years ago, and a fellow-visitor was noisily sick halfway through, although if I'm charitable I suppose it could just have been a stomach upset rather than a reaction to the occasionally extreme subject matter.

He was, BTW, also an extremely accomplished photographer of flowers, and my 8-yr-old niece gave me a calendar featuring some of his orchid photography for Christmas last year.

and really rather sexy, even in much later pix.

So, will you give us the name?

Like Timmy, I think I know who this is, but will hold back for a while in the hope that someone else will take up the slack Wink

It's not that I am being mule-like. The research I did was based on having no knowledge at all and only discovering who he was by stealth. It crosses the line of real research into cheating.

What I can do is to give a clue. He is famous for photography, and his work has caused attempts to ban his work from shops and galleries, usually sight unseen.

And I think his initials are RM.

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

OK. Mr Mapplethorpe: http://www.mapplethorpe.org/biography.html

But the reason I got this was searching google for the name of the image, I'm afraid.

Marc, I seem to rememebr you have a "Free go" lurking somewhere?

Mr Mapplethorpe it certainly is. I should, of course, have re-named the image as a precaution, but I didn't think that 'selfport_1' gave that much away.

I must admit to being astonished that he wasn't recognised: I'd always thought that a familiarity with his work was pretty much a given, to the point where the "urban gay male's flat, with Mapplethorpe prints on the wall and a bathroom full of foliage" was a cliche.

(Umm, yes, if you're wondering, I *do* have a couple of Mapplethorpe reproductions on my wall: "Maybelle(1982) in the sitting room & "Orchid and Palmetto Leaf (1982) in my bedroom. Along with much else!)
(and, I do grow orchids in the bathroom. One of which is currently in flower. But I'm not a cliche. Honest).

(stops digging: hole deep enough already ...)
