If we were living in a world where the concept of a godhead had not been concieved, would there be a chance that religous movements might gain momentum in our technologicaly advanced civilization?
If so, then what form might it take?
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

All it would take would be for one unscrupulous person with a certain amount of imagination (a science fiction writer, perhaps) to discover that the world is full of stupid people just itching to give their money away in return for eternal salvation.
I don't think it would stay god-free for long.
Naming no names, of course, for fear of litigation...

There is a hypothesis that the humnan race is genetically predisposed to religion and that this is the reason why religions exist

You don't need a genetic predisposition (though I don't refute the existence of one); religion is the result of two natural human traits: curiosity and laziness.
Why are we here? and Who made us? are questions easily answered if you assume the existence of a higher being. All it takes is one deluded or enterprising individual to invent one, and to pass on their idea to others.
Since it's easier to believe in what you are told to believe in than to come up with your own philosophy, people will take it on board and pass it off as their own.

There will always be the weak minded who need to have something to cling to out of their fear of death. )
