It's unfair to leave it with no clues at all. We are lookng for a homosexual man who lived openly during his life as such. And yet probably felt an outsider. He is famous for his work, not really his name, and yet his name is well known. He is a US figure.

At risk of blowing this wide open, or at risk of making him feel inadequate, this is Deej's field

Which of my fields would that be?

Unfortunately I don't recognise the face, so all I have to go on is:

- he was openly gay
- he was American
- he did something I might be interested in

That doesn't exactly blow it wide open!

If you could give me some idea of his work, it might help...

Boris Karlof?

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Ok, I say it's Vincent Price. Looks suspiciously like him in his younger years.

I must confess that it took me a while to work that out. James Whale is hardly a well-known director, even though most people will have heard of his work: Frankenstein (1931), The Invisible Man (1933), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and others.

I have to confess that I haven't seen any of his films. For that matter, I don't think that anyone has recommended that I see them either. Depressingly, the style of classical Hollywood cinema is so different from modern blockbusters that there isn't much demand for it any more.

I understand that there was a semi-fictionalised biography (Bill Condon, 1998, with Ian McKellen), but unfortunately I haven't seen that either. It doesn't sound like he had a very happy life -- he killed himself in 1957.
