..... Armistead Maupin, author of the six-book 'Tales of the City' series, which I bought as travel reading, much enjoyed and thoroughly recommend, and of 'The Night Listener', which is an interesting curiosity but fails to deliver satisfaction?
For a' that an' a' that,
It's comin' yet for a' that,
That man tae man, the worrld o'er
Shall brithers be, for a' that.

The essentials were given in my previous post, but more background can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armistead_Maupin and at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_the_City, and via other links from those pages.
For a number of years I quite often needed to make a three-hour train journey to and from London, and - presumably because the novels were originally written in serial form - the 'Tales from the City' series made ideal travel reading. A pleasant dinner, a couple of drinks and an hour or so with a gay-friendly novel - what better way to spend three hours on a train? It was also great fun looking out for passing fellow travellers who obviously recognised the book; most hurried by with reddening countenances, but I did meet a few pleasant travelling companions!
I'll post a new one tomorrow, when I've done the required research.
