If my notorious computer illiteracy doesn't mess things up - as well it might! - a new pic should appear below; I apologise for the indifferent quality, but it's the best I could do with the image at my disposal. You'll note that I've succumbed to Moogle's blandishments about gender bias!
I think this one's quite easy, so no starting clue, but if needed clues are available if you ask nicely!

For a' that an' a' that,

Dudley Moore had a reputation for being str8.

Also, do we take it from

that it's a woman? I didn't think it was on first glance, but... well, I honestly don't have a clue!

Well, having at last overcome the slings and arrows of outrageous incompetence and got this one underway, I guess you deserve a small reward for your patience!

Deeej correctly interpreted my original comment - she is a woman, though I agree with Timmy - she DOES look like a young Dudley Moore!

So ... she's alive and very much out of the closet, and aside from the sphere in which she has achieved fame, she owns an 'ecological' grocery shop in London. There you go, three clues for the price of one!

... she's certainly the doyenne of lesbians working in her field in the UK (though she enjoys world-wide acclaim) and she originally achieved success by making her orientation extremely public. That was 21 years ago.

And, just because I can, I repeat the original pic below -

For a' that an' a' that,

Hmm. That was 1984, right? I don't spoze she was "Big Sister", was she?

The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

... and I'll personally kick you off the end of Wigan Pier attached to a flying aspidistra! (Anyone confused by this post should google 'George Orwell'!)

Incidentally, I appreciate the solicitous newsflash for our feathered friends, but does it apply while they are floating in a pond, or only while they're airborne?

OK - I think it's pretty shameful that we know so little about our female counterparts, but for the inspirationally challenged I'll provide one more clue. THe 'ecological' grocery store previously mentioned no doubt sells a wide range of organic items - not merely citrus fruits!

Is this female well known outside the UK? My knowledge of 'minor' UK celebrities from the 80's is limited. Well, to be absolutely honest, almost non-existent. Well, to be acutely honest - non-existent. I suspect that only Brits will be able to get this one.

Hmm... A lady who in 1984 sold citrus fruit and organic vegetables and made no secret of the fact that she was gay. Doesn't that ring a bell in some stalwart British memory? Not even a tinkle?

Wash your mouth out with soap, young man!

I guess you're right, though; I've got to provide a BIG clue or this one may clog up the famous gay thread forever!

Well, she's the foremost living British lesbian author. The '1984' reference was to the year in which she won a major literary prize for a semi-autobiographical novel which very explicitly outed her. The novel was an international best-seller. It was later serialised on BBC TV and enjoyed another run of paperback sales, grubby well-fingered copies having a place among many a schoolboy's (and presumably some schoolgirls') covert possessions.

Her ownership of a grocery store is a simple fact; the store is called 'Verde'. The other grocery reference was a clue to the title of the novel mentioned above.

Now get googling, someone, please!!!!

When I looked a few minutes ago, the DVD of the BBC TV series mentioned above was advertised in the gay DVD section - but it seems that the selection changes each time you visit the site - so you might need a little luck!

The 'grocery' clue was of course a reference to her novel 'Oranges are not the only fruit'.

A google search will reveal lots of background information, including her personal site. No need for more detail here - there's enough in the clues!

I confess that I'm amazed that this one took so long; obviously the male gay community is less in tune with the female gay community than I expected. Still, I'm glad poor Jeanette has been guessed at last!

Over to you, Dunfyn!

Not fair! Oranges are greengrocery, not grocery! (Not that I would have known anyway.) Very Happy
