This person died in 1875 and this photograph was taken in 1869. So apparently photography was reasonably common by then, though it must be said that he was something of a celebrity by that point.
He was one of the most famous authors of the nineteenth century. Charles Dickens is said to have modelled one of the characters from David Copperfield on him.
