Some clues:

He was born with the same Christian name as me, but adopted a stage name based upon his middle name and that of an Italian godmother.

W. Somerset Maugham alleged that Winston Churchill had told him that he had once slept with him.

He recently cropped up (in a fictionalised version) in a major Hollywood/British film.

I think that this might have been the songwriter Ivor Novello. I know that his real first name was David. I am also quite certain that Novello was "as gay as can be". But I have been known to be wrong Wink

The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

Absolutely right. Ivor Novello (1893-1951):

- birth name David Ivor Davies
- Welsh
- indeed as queer as a coot
- very famous songwriter, actor, playwright and entertainer
- gave his name to the Ivor Novello awards for songwriting
- was portrayed (fictitiously) by Jeremy Northam in Gosford Park (2001, Robert Altman)

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivor_Novello.
