The hoopla surrounding the movie fashioned by Ang Lee from Annie Proulx's "Brokeback Mountain" has prompted me to revisit many a film I have archived over the years, and to search out, download and view for the very first time, a goodly number more.
Because of my aging (and tired) eyes, I limited myself, for the purposes of this initial retrospective, to movies filmed in the English-language; although because of some fluency, I might (probably could, and likely should) have notably considered French-, German-, Italian- or Spanish-language subjects as well.
I simply don't understand what all the controversy is about. Hell's bell's, American, and not the least amongst others filming in the English-language, British and Canadian film-makers, Scottish, Irish and Australian too, have all taken this topic to task over the past 35-years, or so, largely with great dignity and considerable thoughtfulness, with many of these films receiving widespread critical and movie go-er acclaim.
I should add here that, of all the authoring countries whose english-language movies I've of late screened, the British, and notably Channel Four Films, and BBC Films seem to have been at the vanguard of furthering awareness of Gay topics and issues relative to the LGBT community, and fostering goodwill and harmony within the community at large.
I append for you a preliminary list of those films I consider to be "A Keeper"; films for which, if I do not already own either a "Factory" VHS-tape or DvD, I shortly will. This list has been culled from some 450 films I've screened within the past 120-days, and trust me, those that I have discarded far outnumber those that I've retained.
In substance, these are films that the Membership here, and Visitor alike, would find worthy of their time in screening them, regardless of their age, although a goodly number of them address issues relevant to a more youthful audience than that of an aging one. Several, will appear to be rather jaded in this the New Millenium, but none-the-less for it, reflect concerns or issues that still prevail throughout much of the World. Many deal with the topic humorously, often with bufoonery; but then again that is largely how a rather large segement of our Community has see itself, and often behaved. None of them are implicitly erotic, although a number do naturally feature some nudity and implied sexual activity; more than one, some full-frontal nudity; but, always in good taste, and well within the scope of its' intent.
If I might make a suggestion Tim, why not consider creating a "Suggested Vidéo" category right along side that of the others you have on your main web-site, and collate the titles into groupings covering the more significant LGBT themes they cover, with perhaps a brief synopsis of their content, something I woulkd be mosre than willing to provide. This could prove to be an invaluable resourse, to especially the youngsters here, looking for another view point, or simply some answers.

There are definitely to be a few more added to the "A Keeper" list based upon either a cursory review of their content, but I've not completed downloading the film for review, or memory and I've not been able to locate a copy to screen it, even though I may have at one time actually owned the damn thing; amongst these being "Clay Farmers", "Consenting Adult", "Dorian Blues", "Loggerheads", "Making Love", "Ordinary Sinner" [aka Thief In The Night], "Regarding Billy", "The Borstal Boy", "The Five Senses", "The Valley Between". "Time Piece", "Twister", "Two Brothers, And Two Others" and "Victor, Victoria".

'My Beautiful Laundrette' (Stephen Frears, 1985) was a very significant mainstream success in the UK, despite the gay relationship at the centre of the plot. It was pretty groundbreaking for its time, and even if it's a little dated now, it's surely worth including?

"FAQs", "Endgame", "Eclipse", "Leaving Metropolis", "Beefcake", "Hey, Happy!", "Lilies", "Whole New Thing" (currently in Post-production), "Fighting Tommy Riley", "Other Voices, Other Rooms", "Tigerland" and more.
I'm afraid that I had focused largely on, for want of a better word what might be termed fringe or "Art Films", as I'd seen many of the better financed, nad publicied endeavours in theatres over the years, but dicovered I had neglected a far larger body of work that reamined almost completely unknown to me.
I purposefully excluded Documentaries, and however seriously handled, films that deal with subtexts of sexuality, however they may encroach upon LGBT community in a broader context. Films such as "Frisk" and "Out In The Open" fall into these latter categories. Both are exceptionally well done, but neither is a film I would consider viewing more than once.
Amongst the better financed, and publicied, like "My Beautiful Launderette" were amongst others, critical success stories such as Clint Eastwood's "Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil", Neil Jordan's "Interview With The Vampire" and Thom Fitzgerald's "The Hanging Garden". Others omitted might include enduring classics such as William Friedkin's "Boys In The Band"
The films I chose, regardless of their being mainstream theatrical successes, or not, all have one element in common: They regardless of their endings all feature gay-positive portrayals of their subject matérial. Not all are feel-good stories by any means, nor do all end happily either; but, each in their own fashion remains true to the spirit of their subjects portrayal.
A couple of interesting side notes:
"The Sum Of Us" features a simply fabulous, and considerably younger, Russell Crowe in his first headlining film-role. Just to watch him making love with another man is worthy of the time spent screening it, and definitely to die for!
Colin Farrell's willie is definitely not all that it's made out to be. For whatever reason the Director's Cut of the film was made available for release on DvD in Canada only, and includes that one memorable scene they chose to leave on the cutting-room floor throughout the rest of the World. Trust me, folks, you're not mising anything. Any aging old queen who had been even moderately atvie in his youth will have encountered at least one or two that would have met his match and better. The film "A Home At The End Of The World", on the other hand, if you've not had the pleasure of enveloping yourself in it's magic, is well worth the trouble.
