Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

I have a hard time conceiving of a civilized nation without the extacy of the Fig Newton. The thought is ... is.... is absurd.....
A fig Newton is a cookie... (buiscuit) with a thin layer of pastry dough surrounding a thickish core of fig paste.
Quite yummy.... but NOT with Dr. Pepper......

As opposed to the good old US of A, which has the finest cuisine in the world?
Those dishes you mention are indeed British, but, with the possible exception of haggis, they are the sort of things you would get in a roadside cafe, not in a top class restaurant. And while traditional British food does tend to be a bit stodgy (and it's not surprising: it suits the climate), the British have also been very good at assimilating the best dishes from the rest of the world. It's not coincidence that the chicken tikka masala is now humorously known as our "national dish": Indian-style chicken tikka, with British-style gravy.
Have you tasted haggis? If you have, you're entitled to bash it. But if you haven't, I'd suggest you try it. It's not bad.
Okay, who here likes roast beef and yorkshire pudding (mmmmm!)? Is it something people even eat in the rest of the world? When I'm at home we have a roast about once a week: roast beef, roast lamb, roast chicken or roast pork, with roast potatoes and parsnips, steamed vegetables, gravy and the appropriate sauces. Is that a peculiarly British institution?

Mm, nice. Never heard them called Fig Newtons, though. Presumably a brand name we don't have.
Out of interest, in American, do you eat cakes and biscuits at tea-time? Do you drink tea? Do you even have a tea-time?

It reminds me of the story about the hospital managers who renamed the dish "Spotted Richard" because they thought that patients would be too embarrassed to ask for it. They climbed down of course.

Actually Deeeej we dont have tea time. We dumped all the tea in Boston harbor.;-D Actually we consume a large amount of coffee. There used to be a neighbor who were from Canada and they did have tea time. Thats actually where I got to really like tea. I wasnt aware that you could fix it up like coffee with sugar and cream. Sometimes I fix some tea in the mornings, mostly Earl Gray.

I don't know anyone who has anything like tea-time over here. I think the rich people offer their company tea and stuff. My grandmother had a silver teapot and she'd make tea and give me cookies when I was little. We generally get up in the morning, run out the door, and are back in time for supper around 6 in the evening. It's almost impossible to get everyone at home at the same time.
Most kids are latchkey kids and come home to empty houses after school. That's when you open the fridge, grab a Dr. Pepper and some chips and go back out to find your friends.
There's an ad on tv where the father yells, "Dinner" and the kids all run and get in the car. The mother smiles and says, "They'll get used to dinner at home" as she plops a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken in the middle of the table. Not exactly the perfect family setting.
I drink tea. I never liked coffee and I love hot tea in the winter, but the US is the land of Starbucks....anything that you can carry in a thermal mug.
What do you guys put in your tea?? Do you use tea bags or the real stuff?

You take a sheep, disembowel it, take the innards and stuff them all into the stomach with a bit of barley and an onion for that down home flavor and you have a hagus......
A meal fit for a.... a.... well, I don't know who...

Roast beef is wonderful with a bit of horseradish. Fresh strong horseradish (that's a type of root vegetable mixed with cream -- nothing to do with horses), that goes right up your nose and makes you cry uncontrollably. Beef can be so-so without it, depending on the quality of the meat.
Mustard's good, too (though not as good with beef as horseradish). But that should be proper French Dijon mustard, not the bright yellow American stuff. English mustard's strong, but good in moderation.

Rich people can afford Scotch.....
I like tea for brekkie and Kevy makes killer sweet tea..... Very yummy in the Summer.
I don't know bout the Starbucks there but here I can get tea to go....
A bit of trivia about Kentucky Bucket Chicken.... Did you know that the colonel has genetically enhanced the chicken to have 6 drumsticks per bird.
It makes for a tasty treat but they are hellish fast when it comes time to catch them.

Cream in tea? That sounds horrible! You sure you don't mean milk?
Earl Grey is lovely with a little milk (some people insist that you shouldn't put anything at all in it, except possibly a little lemon juice, but they're just being pretentious). Sugar, however, absolutely ruins it -- the taste is too subtle. If you want to put sugar in tea, you're much better off putting it in builder's tea (bog-standard Indian stuff) as it's much stronger-tasting. The sugar won't ruin that, as it's already frightful.

Oooh oooh oooh,
Yes...... The horseradish is a moral imperative for me.....
Mustard is ok.... But here horseradish rules.
And I prefer lumpy smashed potatoes with my roast beast too.

High tea isn't the same thing as afternoon tea. Afternoon tea is when you sip Earl Grey from delicate china cups, and eat cucumber sandwiches and scones and biscuits. It's taken at about 4 or 4.30. Even though people in the UK don't usually have formal afternoon tea (unless they have visitors) it's very common to have at least a cup of tea at that time.
High tea is an evening meal (supper) taken at about 5.30 or 6.00 and is a slightly (dare I say it) working class thing to do. And institutional. People who have had afternoon tea don't usually eat until later - 8.00 or 8.30.

Brian, it is indeed Scottish. I'm sure Cossie would be a better person to ask about it than me. I've only had it a couple of times.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haggis
I admit it sounds horrible. But honestly, it doesn't have anything worse in it than sausage. (Or does that simply put you off sausage?) Like any dish, well-prepared it can be delicious. Luckily, I've not had it enough times to know what it tastes like if it's not well-prepared.
