Author of some of the most challenging Science Fiction around (some of which verges on the pornographic) he is also well-known for extensive works of literary theory and criticism in the SF field, having held academic posts in this field.

His most famous long short story / short novella won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, and is considered by many (including me!) to be the best SF story ever written. This extract clues for the title of it:

Agate gave way to Malachite:
Tourmaline:
Beryl (during which month I turned twenty-six):
Porphyry:
Sapphire (that month I took the ten thousand I hadn't frittered away and invested it in The Glacier, a perfectly legitimate ice cream palace on Triton - the first and only ice cream palace on Triton ....."

I'm now out until late tonight UK time - more clues then if needed - and here's another pic (a bit less forbidding looking) to be going on with.

Excellent stuff ! Indeed it is - Samuel R. ("Chip") Delaney.

And the extract is from "Time Considered As A Helix of Semi-Precious Stones" - anyone who hasn't read it should consider doing so - it's an easy read.

Lots of good stuff on Delany on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Delaney, and a very interesting site on Delaney by himself writing under a pseudonym on http://www.pseudopodium.org/repress/KLeslieSteiner-SamuelRDelany.html

Over to you, E.J.
