It's not pickle, but my mother's home-made green tomato chutney is delicious. Especially with cauliflower cheese and proper butcher's sausages.

In the markets here there are litterally thousands of choices.
Just about every vegie that is picklable is pickled......
OOh.... A particular favorite is dilled brussle sprouts.
Hot peppers are always found on the table here too...

Now here we go......
Chutneys are more like salsas and relishes....
Pickles are mostly whole or sliced vegies in largish chunks.....
Thats not to say that I don't adore chutneys..... Mango is wonderful... but I prefer Plum and ginger......
I make a mean fresh mango, onion, jalapeno and sour orange salsa. Great with grilled fish......

Over here "pickle" usually means something like Branston Pickle, which is a sauce made up of vegetables cut up into very small chunks. It can be used in a not dissimilar way to chutney.
I've seen whole pickled gherkins and eggs in fish-and-chip shops, but never row upon row of the things. I guess they're not as popular in the UK as they are in America.

Interesting play on words as gherkin is I believe German for "pickle"
So a pickled gherkin is a pickled pickle.

I LOVES PICKLES.......

... and investigated the pickle situation in ASDA (a UK subsidiary of Walmart). There was an aisle filled with them - mostly curious American confections which showed little sign of being edible! But on the basis of volume on the shelves, the most popular pickle seems to be beetroot (Yum, yum!), followed at some distance by red cabbage. There were gherkins aplenty, too.
Oh, and incidentally - being a word-freak as I am - I have to say that gherkin arrived in English in the seventeenth century as a loan word from Dutch. It derives from 'gurken', the plural of 'gurk', meaning 'cucumber'. The 'h' was added in English because without it the 'g' would be soft, as it is followed by an 'e'. And, let's face it, who'd want to eat pickled jerkins?
For a' that an' a' that,
It's comin' yet for a' that,
That man tae man, the worrld o'er
Shall brithers be, for a' that.

Oh.....
I do not allow anything from any "Walmart" company into my home.
I am adamantly opposed to their manipulation of business and to how they ruin family owned businesses whereever they go.

In the UK, ASDA/Walmart is not the market leader. I don't know if that makes it any better or not as far as you're concerned (probably not). Over here we're having similar problems with another supermarket chain called Tesco. But even so, there are still quite a few alternatives: Tesco, ASDA, Waitrose, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and several smaller chains.
To a degree, all supermarkets end up pushing out local businesses. Do you boycott all supermarkets? Or is Walmart the only major chain in America?

Here the Walmart stores are so large and they carry everything.... Albeit the merchandise is cheaply made in third world countries where they pay their employees pennies per hour....
When a town here is targeted for a new Walmart the company promises hundreds of jobs and they will be a great boon to the community.
When a Walmart opens in a town here nearly all competition is run out of business.
They lie... plain and as simple as that... Yes they hire hundreds of people... but once the store is fully stocked and open they fire about 80% of those hored... They also consider 18 hours a week full time employment.
Try and feed a family on $70.00 a week.... I think the conversion is about £40 or so. They have so much money and influence it is frightening.

Mmmm - I used to love pickled eggs: used to have them for lunch along with a pie and a pint in my pub-going days.
Pickled walnuts are good, too - something I haven't had, or even seen, for years.

I found one........ Now I need some walnuts
Pickled Walnuts
Pickling walnuts is a three-week process from picking to preserving, it is dead simple to make a plentiful supply of pickled walnuts
Ingredients
2kg freshly picked black walnuts
225g salt Sweet Pickling Syrup
1 litre malt vinegar
500g brown sugar
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
Method
In the UK pick walnuts at the end of June before the hard nut forms inside the green shiny case. Pick a bucketful and, wearing rubber gloves, prick each walnut a couple of times with a fork. Watch out for the clear juice this produces. It is deceptive, as it stains a dark brown.
Cover the walnuts with water and add salt. Leave for a week, then drain and renew with fresh brine solution for another week or so.
Next, lay walnuts out on trays in a dry, airy place. In a couple of days they will turn jet black. Now the walnuts are ready for to be pickled..
For the sweet pickling syrup
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring syrup mix to the boil, then add walnuts and simmer for 15 minutes.
Cool and spoon walnuts into large jars, then cover with syrup. They will last for years. These pickled walnuts are great with cheese or cold meats, and make an interesting colour contrast on a pile of mashed potato.

A conker is the nut from the Horse-chestnut tree. British schoolboys use them for playing a game called (unsurprisingly) "conkers".
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conker
And no, you don't actually eat them (they are actually poisonous). But some people pickle them, because it supposedly makes them harder, and that makes them better for playing the game of conkers.

The worst part about them considering 18 hours a week full-time comes from them not having to provide benefits. They are also extremely anti-union.
