When I was a kid football (soccer) shorts were so brief that the upper thighs were uncovered. They were wonderfully tight, too. this was normal.
Rugby shorts were short and flapped in the breeze.
The only swimwear was trunks - sort of larger speedos. The shorts with the mesh catchers were very unpopular.
For girls the bikini arrived and got to be 3 triangles of cloth with a shoelace. At the same time boys styarted to cover up more and more and more.
Shorts became long long long. Speedos became "gay"
What happened?

You wont find speedos in a swimming pool in the states, if you do hes either gay or European. Basketball players used to wear real short shorts. then some good christians decided that they were to exposing for the children to see or to wear, so poof there thay went and it just sorta spread.

Everyhting experiences the pendulum effect. I'm waiting very patiently for speedos and short shorts to be 'in' again.

I dream of boys with big bulges in their trousers,
Never of girls with big bulges in their blouses.
…and look forward to meeting you in Cóito.

Legs themselves have their own pendulum effect!
My son, when I asked him why he doesn't wear speedos, said "They are gay", and meant it in its correct manner.

There is no correct manner for that remark.
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

As far as I remember from my days at school, football shorts have been pretty much the same for the last twenty years. But few people wear the same sort of short shorts outside sporting events. I can only assume that it's because styles have changed, though I'm aware that certain parts of the world (and to a certain extent, the UK too) have become more conservative and that is likely to have had at least a subliminal effect too.
The reason I, personally, don't wear Speedos is that (in no particular order) (a) it's not fashionable, (b) it doesn't do me any favours (I'm embarrassed), and (c) at least in hot climates, I tend to burn easily so I cover up as much of my anatomy as possible to save on sun cream. Also, (d), there is something unmistakeably Gallic about them. Not that there is anything bad about that in itself (the French are one of the most fashionable and attractive races in the world), but I have come across too many French beaches that were pretty excruciating to the eye due to the number of elderly pensioners (of both sexes) dressed in little more than a thong.
I never heard that Speedos were "gay" in the homosexual sense (after all, I am sure that the girls appreciate them too). "Gay" is one of those words that is bandied around so much by British teenagers that I don't usually stop to consider whether they actually mean homosexual. I just assume they are using an unoriginal and poor choice of words.

You will find elderly pensioners in little more than a thong in more places than just France. Atleast back when I lived in Florida it seemed as though with age increasing age, there is decreasing modesty (not that that is a problem, well, except for my eyes).

Basketball shorts now-a-days are quite ridiculous. It seems like they would be a pain to wear shorts that baggy.

It seems as though trends are moving in the direction of shorter swimwear, that is to say shorter suits that have the mesh, but still a move in the right direction if you ask me.

Yes, thats true. Yet all hope is not lost. If any of you row, as I do, the shorts that rowers wear are very tight, and can be pretty short. Usually they are just as tight if not tighter than boxer-briefs. (its called trow, for future refrences)
