Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughtered-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds; and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of-wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless hall of air.
Up, up the delirious burning blue
I've topped the windswept hights with easy grace
Where never lark or eagle flew.
And, while with silent uplifting mind, I've trod
The untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Pilot Officer
Gillespie Magee
No 412 squadron RCAF
Killed 11 December 1941

High Flight (with FAA Annotations)

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth(1),
And danced(2) the skies on laughter silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed(3) and joined the tumbling mirth(4)
Of sun-split clouds(5) and done a hundred things(6)
You have not dreamed of --
Wheeled and soared and swung(7)
High in the sunlit silence(8).
Hov'ring there(9)
I've chased the shouting wind(10) along and flung(11)
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious(12), burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights(13) with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle(14) flew;
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space(15),
Put out my hand(16), and touched the face of God(17).

(from John Gillespie Magee Jr., "High Flight")

FAA SUPPLEMENT to "High Flight"

1. Flight crews must insure that all surly bonds have been slipped entirely before aircraft taxi or flight is attempted.

2. During periods of severe sky dancing, the FASTEN SEATBELT sign must remain constantly illuminated.

3. Sunward climbs must not exceed the maximum permitted aircraft ceiling.

4. Passenger aircraft are prohibited from joining the tumbling mirth.

5. Pilots flying through sun-split clouds must comply with all applicable visual and instrument flight rules.

6. These hundred things are forbidden by the regulations of the Federal Aviation Administration.

7. Wheeling, soaring, and swinging will not be accomplished simultaneously except by pilots in the flight simulator or in their own aircraft on their own time.

8. Be advised that sunlit silence will occur only when a major engine malfunction has occurred.

9. "Hov'ring there" will constitute a highly reliable signal that a flight emergency is imminent.

10. Forecasts of shouting winds are available from the local FSS. Encounters with unexpected shouting winds should be reported by pilots.

11. Be forewarned that pilot craft-flinging is a leading cause of passenger airsickness.

12. Should any crewmember or passenger experience delirium while in the burning blue, submit an irregularity report upon flight termination.

13. Windswept heights will be topped by a minimum of 1,000 feet to prevent massive airsickness-bag use.

14. Aircraft engine ingestion of, or impact with, larks or eagles should be reported to the FAA and the appropriate aircraft maintenance facility.

15. Air Traffic Control (ATC) must issue all special clearances for treading the high untresspassed sanctity of space.

16. FAA regulations state that no one may sacrifice aircraft cabin pressure to open aircraft windows or doors while in flight.

17. The "face of God" is highly restricted airspace. Touching it is absolutely prohibited. Violation may result in loss of license and other sanctions.

let me guess...you're in jest when you say you're one of the youngest members of the MB...

Why else would you post such as this a so dated item (very good none the less)?

An older generation than me liked poetry alot. They were perhaps more creative, thoughtful perhaps, not lulled into cognitive inactivity by constant 'pop culture' from radio & tv programming.

are you indeed a senior member??? Could it be a youth that finds, appreciates and posts such a dated item?

and who often refers to his tender youthfulness???

First High Flight is like the motto and inspiration of the air force. My uncle is in the airforce and has it frammed and hung on the wall. I like poetry and have always loved this poem, I think its absolutely beautiful. Karma, well thats a buddhist thingy, and just as well known today as it ever has been. If you will look you will see that the quote comes from a song by my favorite guys Savage Garden.

yeah, you're right. My 'bust'. sorry.

I'd checked out the song but not all the lyrics.

If you don't toot your own horn who's going to toot it for you??

I can identify with you in that I've always been a little more mature (mentally) than others my age, and interested in different things than they.

I've been deceived before many times in person & on line so I'm trying to be more discerning.. trying that is! haha.

You can share your teenage angst with us. Man, we've been there & gotten out of it alive!

Love you brother! Please forgive me.. Teddy Smile
