I have just met by email someone I was at school with. Nothing unusual in that. Except he ended up a year below me, and I met him via iomfats.org. And we have much in common, including heterosexual marriage

Given that fact that I myself visited this site for years before I ever knew who you were, I'd believe that anything is possible on this site.
Do you know how many unique (and they really need to be guaranteed unique, even though I suspect that may be technically impossible) visitors you have, or have had over the years? It might even be possible to work out the probability of coincidences of this sort occurring. It must have happened at least a couple of times, now. Three? Four? More?
Given the relatively high profile of this site, the nature of its content, the background of its author, and the variety of its visitors, it's not surprising that there are among them people you know. I know I was attracted to this site precisely because I did seem to have something in common with you; it was not just another generic run-of-the-mill American site-with-attached-board. (It was only afterwards that I discovered quite much I did actually have in common.) I can well believe that other people who revolved in vaguely similar circles as you would feel the same way.
If you met this chap via iomfats.org, how did he know it was you? Or you know it was him?

i didn't know it was he because we knew each other but slightly. Nor did he know it was I. (ha! who is the pedant now!!)
But he told me enough to know the schools he went to and the years, and I identified myself to him
I can do unique visitors over a time period, but many of those are "arrived by mistake" like all web sites get. A true anaylsis woudl be better done with returning visitors which are based on a 30 day period
I have 42.61% returning visitors out of 34,698 vistors. This does not include the messageboard at all. So that makes 14,784 returning visitors.
Some of these returned once only, of course, but the majority viewed 9 pages or more. Most viewed 51-100 pages
