can anything be obscure any more?
I just said something to Deej that I knew he would understand (and hope take as a joke) and that others might not. Not meaning to leave others out, but shared obscure knowledge use to be the password to this, and other select society's. What's the point of knowing anything - when you can look it up in a flash?

Oh, I should think most people understand the relevance of that comment. Witness the number of people on this board who have had random bits of Latin in their signatures!
Incidentally, what many people don't realise is that, in those circumstances, "et" does not mean what they think it means.
If you want to be obscure, it's still very possible: unless they specifically asked someone who was in my house at school, I don't think there's any way anyone could find out what the answer to the question in my signature is. Notice that I didn't tell you when you asked.

Hey All,
Usually wait to see if a thread grows legs before I post again, but I can't today! I won't be here to reply, I get to go out and play!
Sorry to the Scotsman, who thinks I post to much, I will return, all too soon I am afraid. But for an hour or two...

Not not uncommon (hurray -- a triple negative!). But I think most people round here are fairly well read and will spot the reference.
No need to apologise -- hope I wasn't too blunt.
Best wishes,
Deeej

Greetings Deej
Yes I did notice that you didn't explain your signature, and if you still aren't - you shouldn't have brought back up. I will provide my guess in a moment.
Deej, you hardly ever answer the questions directly. If you didn't already have a nickname, I would dub you 'Sir Tangent-eej'. The only thing that GW and I have in common is our firm belief that everyone needs a nickname.
There is 'obscure' or 'arcane' Knowledge, and that is distinct from trivia that requires a weegee to divine.
And now my guess - big drum roll -
"Can you sing again? But this time without the music so I can hear your voice"
Considering what little I know about you, it could make sense both on the board and not.

>"Can you sing again? But this time without the music so I can hear your voice"
For a random stab in the dark, that is actually pretty good, insofar that it gives a clue to the answer to the first question, "Can you sing?" But it is neither an expansion of the question nor an answer to the second question, "Can you sing again?"
I'm afraid you won't be able to guess it; the answer is superlatively obscure. But if you read my page on Notions on Wikipedia you might get some idea of the logic you need to answer it.

That would make it too easily.
I'm sure Cossie posted a link a couple of days ago, though.

OK
I think I read what I was suppose to, in fact, I read it twice because I don't think any of it translates into American. Not the concept, not experience, nor the words.
All I can say is I laak being played with, and I'm about to lob.
Having read that, it somehow makes me think of an old book/movie "Good bye Mr. Chips" by James Hilton.
Deej were you one of Mr. Chipling's boys? I think that you would have fit right in.
I have no better guess for all the effort expended, sorry David, don't mean to be dense, but without the answer and the logic I am afraid that this qualifies as convoluted rather than obscure.
Having though of James Hilton, I think tonight's book will be "Lost Horizon" a little time in the Valley of the Blue Moon might be good for my soul.

>Deej were you one of Mr. Chipling's boys? I think that you would have fit right in.
The name was "Chipping", actually. And, by a funny coincidence, though the school in the book was fictional, SMG/ITV did actually make a TV movie of "Goodbye, Mr Chips" in 2002 at Winchester. If you want to know what my school was like -- well, that film won't tell you, because there's much more to a school than the buildings, but it might give you some idea of the environment I lived and worked in.

It's not a bad film, either.

"Can you sing?" was a Notions question. And the answer to that was, (said rather than sung,) "All people that on earth do dwell."
The next question was: "Can you sing again?" And the answer to that was, "Can you?"
That's all there is to it. Does that help?

OK hot shot.
It is your signature, and I accept your answer, but after working so hard thinking about everything I know about you - I like my answer better; it has content that fits you! Oh well; that's what I get for thinking.

I went through a few signatures based on Notions questions. Like "How many feathers are there in a clump?" to which I got some interesting answers. Then I changed it to "Can you sing again?" and no-one asked what it meant, so I decided not to change it until someone did. And now you have.

Ah, but you have Google. All you need to do is put in your recollections, and it corrects them for you. It's an easy way to be an "instant expert" on just about anything.
And that brings us on topic again.

Okay, I've finished messing around with my signature.
If anyone can work out what it means, I'll give them a pound. Yes, a whole one pound stirling. By paypal or post or something. If you don't take pounds, you'll need to get it changed.
It did read something else a few minutes ago, but it's the same phrase, only encoded slightly differently.
It is literally the simplest cipher I could think of.

I hate to tell you this, but the simplest cipher is a 'letter addition or subtraction' With your first letter being 'b' the addition could only be 1 and that dont work.
As a side bar Deeej, have you read the exchange between the Boss and I on the Shake thread? Did I mess up somewhere?

It was the simplest cipher I could think of. I already knew about that one, so I didn't have to think of it. But this one I had to give a little thought to.
(Cue long debate over the semantics of the word "think".)
And actually, you did get the first letter right. Now all you need to do is work on the second letter! (Trust me, it is a very very simple cipher.)
