I am experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms because I have been deprived of my daily dose of pedantry!
You really must be more responsible and give due warning of your absences from the site, so that the rest of us can inhale sufficient narcotic substances to tide us over the period of deprivation!
Seriously, though - you are such a regular fixture here that I am prompted to hope that nothing untoward has happened.

Oh, Cossie and Brian, I am so touched by your concern. That makes three people who've been wondering where I am.
I'm still here; I've just been extremely busy -- I drove up to Cambridge and back again yesterday (a round trip of about 250 miles, as I drove the wrong way round the M25 motorway for a bit -- missed the turning) to record a friend playing the piano, for a film I'm working on. It must have cost me £25 or £30 in petrol alone. Cambridge is a wonderful town, though, so it makes it worth it.
I'm back now, and though I continue to be horrifically busy (until at least the 8th of May, the day before my birthday, when I have to hand in the last of my academic essays for this year) I'll post a few random comments from time to time to ensure that nobody thinks I am shirking my duties on this board!
Best wishes,
David
P.S. Cossie -- did you choose that title in the hope that, if nothing else, I would be so incensed by its content that I would have to post in reply? "Wherefore art thou" doesn't mean "where are you"; it means "why are you". If you're asking why I am, then I fear we're in for another long debate on the meaning of life!

This wasn't addressed to me, but I am not going to let that stand in my way!
That which we call a Deeeej, by any name would smell as sweet.
(Anyway, she should have asked "wherefore art thou a Montagu" - and then everyone would have understood - even whiskey-drinking Scots people who can't always tell their Burns from their Shakespeare.)

Hmmm ... Well, to be absolutely (and uncharacteristically) honest, I chose the title because it sounded good! You should have realised by now that I don't let little things like accuracy get in my way. But you're right - I did realise that it would have a red rag effect!
Of course, I would normally have replied in a much more aggressive fashion, but as you nominated me as a genius in another thread I am being sympathetic, as you are clearly suffering from a severe dose of poor judgement!
I think I was best summed up by my Fifth Year (Year 11) Form-master, who wrote on my report: 'John has an extraordinarily logical mind, a remarkable facility for both deductive and inductive reasoning and he is a very able communicator. It is a great pity that he appears so reluctant to apply these talents in any area relevant to the academic syllabus."
And I really liked that guy!

That must have been in the middle of the last century, when most teachers still knew how to write a decent sentence in English. Sic transit gloria mundi.
