The daughter of Fred Phelps appeared recently on TV to defend the "church's" practice of demonstrating at the funerals of soldiers who died while serving in Iraq.

made me wonder whether it would not be a bad idea for someone to create a site called "godhatesrevfredpehlps". Surely he must.

The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

That man is obviously mad, and a crook, obsessed with hatred, and as such should be ignored, or be kept under lock and key.

What never ceases to surprise me, is that men like him attract crowds of followers. Even people who may initially seem to have retained a fair amount of mental and religious sanity, pick up some of this "gospel" of hatred and spread it among their own associates and followers.

I don't think it is quite as bad as it seems. I watched the video and the mad crazy woman said that they have fewer than 100 followers (how many fewer?) and that 80% of members are relatives.

A crazed crackpot he may be, but I think the media is blowing it up out of all proportion. Those with thick skins may laugh at them, but I can't be the only one who is upset every time these people pop up. They don't deserve the publicity they get.

It has already been done, along with "god hates shrimp". If you click on the wikipedia link and go to the bottom, you will find a list of parody sites.

I wasn't thinking so much about Fred Phelps, but more in terms of rich, powerful, ruthless and prominent preachers like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and others, whose influence also on our side of the pond is obvious.

I have the same feeling of unease as you, when these people, or their lookalikes, pop up. But the newsmedia love them because they boost their sale figures.
