Greetings Whip-

Please clarify; are all of your real world friends and family on line, or are your on line friends your best friends, and some of those feel like family?

I'm not egotistical enough to assume that you have read all of the things that I have posted in the month and a week that I have frequented this board, but early on I said that I doubted that the internet offered enough dimensional depth to allow me to make real friends. My problem is that if you are my friend, I want to look into your eyes and watch your reactions while we talk. I want to see your cheeks color when I say something that strikes a cord with you. Friendship is sometime in the silence instead of in the words, and the net only allows for words.

Perhaps it is another of the great cultural divides between the young and the old. Forgive me my dotteridge for thinking that you are missing something, but friends put their arms around you and give you a bone breaking hug when you need it (and when THEY need it), and all the {{{}}} in the ether can't come close to feeling like that!

Regards
Simon

... I 'met' Brian on this Board, and I immediately detected a kindred spirit, even if there is a 40-odd year difference between our ages. We decided to be cybergrandad and cybergrandson. It may seem artificial to you, but it doesn't seem artificial to me. Sure, I would love to hug Brian - as a grandad - but, believe me, our relationship - ethereal though it may be - has enriched my life. I hope Brian feels the same; I think he is quite a remarkable guy for 15, and I think that he has derived a lot of benefit from being part of our community. I'm not ashamed to say that - as a grandad! - I love him and I am very proud of him!

I have one best friend in the real world. His name is Kol. I have other best friends tho, that I have never met, but hope to some time. There are two especially, one 17 the other my age. They are lovers and they are my best buds and even like brothers. Then I have all my friends here, even you Simon. my real life grandfather is a (I cant say this in here, Timmy would probably get on to me). I adopted a grandfather here and I listen to him and hope one day to be able to meet him if he will let me(oh Cossie, I have asked for info for going to Oxford especially going to Christ Church. I saw a show on them and I got very interested). I dont have a father and was so timid about coming in here, and Timmy and others just jumped right in and made me feel comfy here. I dont make friends in the real world very well. I tend to be a bit timid, I dislike large crowds, however, I can outthink my moms boyfriends. You probably havent heard about one of them and the ice tea. Im not a coward and some boys at school have found that out, its just hard for me to relate to most guys.

...Well, the family that IMs together stays together right??

Rutlust, me friend, young whip just typed that fast.. his attention to grammer, composition, spelling & typing details is lax if he's not being graded on it..and you don't count there....

anyone who has read Brian's posts about his family will know it is a good thing he is speaking of here as it has brought him back from the brink of suicide at least once.

It's a bit callouse to say those brian's met here cannot be as good as those in his neighborhood. His family is all around & they're just plain unappreciative of the boy! He doesn't drive yet so where is he to go for fellowship? hmm?

Like others I know he has a high IQ & is bored with his peer's smalltalk & jokes..He yearns for intelligent conversation. Do us a favor, don't dump a pail of water on this one source of hope & happiness for him.

Well, brian, I'm glad you also have found good friends via the internet. I also have made many & learned alot while online. Online we can pick friends with our same interests whereas near our hme there may be none.

I can at times detect a special spirit online tho the sender may be distant in time & space. Also I can hear silence online..The pauses in IM conversations.. the dot dot dots between thoughts indicate same. I know what rutlust means, but in absence of close friendships & family online friends do work quite well.

Actually, those of us who are perceptive & discerning can share, express & often detect the moods & spirits of others online as well as in person. Other more hardened characters may still bully & bump others around haphazardly online as they do in person.

kind regards to all from your friend TeddyBear in the southern USA.

Life's a trip * Friends help you through * Adventure on life!

... if you're accepted at Oxford (or anywhere else on this side of the pond) I'll be there to greet you and you've got a guaranteed place to stay for weekends whenever you want to!

Greetings Cossie

I did not mean to denigrate in any way a relationship that you might have. I just find that for me the internet is flat. I can repeat everything I said, but what is the point? I NEED the non-verbal aspects of interpersonal contact as well as the verbal.

As far as your relationship - I'm glad that it meets your needs and provides Brian with what he needs too. I think that the point of view of someone 40 years out of step with his day to day reality is a very good thing. I have real issues with the purpose of experience, if not to benefit others on the road...

Regards
Simon

I believe you. I sure got interested in Oxford after the show. It would be great having a place to stay on week ends and holidays. All I can probably afford to give you is a smile and a hug.

Hey kid-

Based on very limited input, it seem that you have the wherewith all to qualify.

It is 'all expenses paid' but they expect you to be frugal.
