Is this an infared photo? It has that look about it.

Yes....with a digital camera.
A visible light photo of approximately the same thing:

I'm not at all sure how infared works. Is it a special digital camera just for infared photos or is it a matter of adding special filters to any camera digital or not? The infared shot has a quality that pulls you into the picture in a spooky sort of way.

with a digital camera you need a special filter. the camera's sensor must also be sensative to IR light....some are not.
with a film camera you need special film as well as the filter. you also must load the film into the camera in total darkness.

I haven't seen an infrared photo since I discovered the film in high school. It also gives an unusual quality to pictures taken without a filter. What's the factory in the background?
btw, I love your signature block. My wife's nickname is Poes (Dutch for Pussycat). If you don't mind my using it privately, what are the font and spacing?

The total darkness bit is the case for only True IR mono film. The other two types, Extended-red and False-coulour can be loaded in the same manner as conventional film.
As the above spelling hints at, I happened to have a copy of the Oxford Companion to Photography sitting next to me.
Digital seems to be the way to go however, as far as IR is concerned, as most IR photography today is done in digital.
On another note, False-colour film seems like it could have some interesting applications as you can keep some colours normal.
I love unamerican spelling.

And un-British spelling, it sounds like, too!

I must say, however, that I am not bothered in the least that my spelling was both unamerican and unbritish.

The factory in the background is an old power plant...I don't know if it is still operating.
You are welcome to copy my sig pic.....I did
The original

(='.'=) This is Bunny. Copy and paste bunny into your

You have to play with the fonts and spacing to see what looks right
