I am going to let Megaman have a look at this lot before deletion. Making it registered members only is no guarantee.

Timmy, Whoever it is is getting the email addresses off the site. Im getting flooded with spam. Fortunately it goes in the bulk file, but its the thought thats irittating. By the way these emails are originating from a single source. Logic bombs are nice.

Spambots has always harvested email addresses from websites. Ideally one uses a disposable email address for one's "public presence". It's just one of those things, I'm afraid.

HOw can any of us be sure we are not teh cause of such a spam attack? I know that a friend of mine once told me he had noticed something was using a lot of memory on his computer and then when he checked closer he discovered that some program was downloading and uploading from his computer without his knowledge and it took him some time to get rid of that thing which was taking over his computer. I hate to say what I want to do with some of those persons and, yes, some corporations who think they have a right to control my computer.

It would have to be a very clever bot to figure out how to post on one particular site, and then post. On the whole, bots are custom-written for very popular web sites. This one doesn't fit the bill: it's aimed at a niche market. Of course, Timmy/Megaman could find out if it were one of us quite easily by looking at the IP address(es) of the spammers.

I assume you have a firewall, keep your operating system up to date, scan regularly for viruses (if applicable), and not use Internet Explorer, though? In that case, it is quite difficult to pick up viruses or worms without knowing.

the board software is one of the many boards available. It just isn't widely known.

There is an industry of message board link spam. $20 buys 35,000 boards spammed.

phpBB spambots even get around the rather crude captcha systems they have there.

That can happen if you dont have a firewall. I use Norton and it constantly monitors what my puter is doing. If its an unauthorized upload or download, Norton stops it and ask for varification.
