people say that you can't keep your eyes open when sneezing?
Can you keep your eyes open when sneezing?
Inquiring minds want to know.....
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

I have never been able to. Closing your eyes when sneezing is a reflex, like blinking. Or sneezing itself.
I am sure it would be technically possible, if you were to hold your eyelids open: most reflexes can be overcome if you try hard enough. Though I don't know why you'd want to. In fact, if you Google around a bit you'll find that there are people who claim they can hold their eyes open when they sneeze, by willpower alone.
When I was little, it was a playground myth that your eyes would pop out if you sneezed with your eyes open. I don't believe that for a minute -- there is nowhere for the increased pressure behind the eyes to come from. The nasal passages are not directly connected to the eyes, except by tear ducts, and those are very narrow.

Walking in Manhattan this morning, I felt a sneeze coming on. "What the hell, I'll see if I can keep my eyes open." I kept looking down the street, the scneeze came, a moderately strong one, and both eyes stayed open with no particular effort. The right eye tended to try to close but didn't. The customary second sneeze came and both eyes again stayed open.
When I got home I checked the board and am pleased to report, David, that both eyeballs are still in place. If I catch a really big sneeze one day, I'll report.
Best to all inquiring minds, Mac
P.S. The following 'typo' came up when I was trying to write 'inquiring minds': " > ". Hmmm.
