I asked my friend if i could ride his motorcycle. He agreed and we went to the next town over where there is a airstrip that is used for racing. H let me take it for a spin. MAN that was so cool when I got of my heart was at least 200 bpm it was so fun, to go that fast. I now know what I am saving for. The feeling of the wind in my face, throw my shorts, and shirt felt so exhilarating. I just felt free. Not a care in the world for the 2 hours we where there.

... speaking as a guy whose son is into motorbike racing, it's not a good idea to wear shirt and shorts. However good you THINK you are - you aren't that good! Get the proper kit and enjoy it safely!

It's wonderful to ride a bike fast in shirt and shorts. The wind in the hair with no crash hat is amazing, and the sun on your back.

I gave up riding bikes when three people tried to kill me in the same week. I used to commute far too fast on a small bike. I dropped it once at 60mph on a dead straight road - my fault - I misjudged a gap and clipped something with the tip of the bars.

As I slid along the road, with the crash helmet scraping along the road, and my full leather racing suit slowing me down reasonably well, all I was really worried about was whether I'd be going under any oncoming traffic.

I wasn't screaming with pain as the road tore my skin to shreds, and I hadn't been killed when my head hit the road surface.

After I got up and walked back to the bike I checked myself over. The suit was intact, the helmet was scratched and had to be replaced because they are designed for one hard knock only. I had a headache. That was it.

Save for a bike, buy one that is within your capabilities and get lessons on handling it. And buy the full armour. If you can't afford the armour you can't afford the bike. Gravel rash is not appealing to receive, and sucks for your lover to look at.

Sure. It's a great bike. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelspecs/6/0/specs.aspx Buy the armour first, and do get real lessons in riding it from a professional, and do track things on tracks. However good you are on the track the public highway is full of people who just don't see you. Don't forget proper boots and gauntlets, coz we quite like having you aroiund with all parts functioning.

Just make sure that you do the whole High Performance Bike course. I have a licence that means I can go out and buy one of those and ride it away today. But the right thing to do would be to have it delivered to the track and have proper lessons on bike handling and control, especially for when things go pear shaped.

I happen to want a grumbly and loud Hog, but I hate the way they ground the footrests on even a slight bend

I completely agree with Tim & Cossie I have a full licence which enables me to drive any bike any size, having said that it is a few years since I rode one.

Yes you must have all the gear because skin is softer than leather, you know I can remember flying through the air and thinking when will I land, when I did I had a few burns on my knees but the gloves were ripped to bits.
Thank god they were made of thick leather, I gave up riding bikes when my friend nearly lost his leg, he had a row with a car.

Please be careful and do think about the lessons and please get the gear..

Out of interest, how old are you?

I don't see that as a personal question -- I was simply trying to place you in my mind! People here tend to fall into either a "young" (under 25) or "old" (over 40) category with not very many people in between.

From your writing style I would say you were a teenager.

No. He's a brit. And so he is likely to be at least 40, since they let you pass a test which allowed any engine size up to about when he would have been riding.

I have quoted Timmy, but to be fair I should have quoted David and Jay as well.

I think this part of the discussion in the thread is out of place: if and when Jack wants to tell his age he will do so; until then it is unseemly (I think) to pressure him or to speculate. One of the good things about this board is that anything you want to keep private is kept private - and no questions asked.

sorry no spell check in class.

Well, jack did ask me what I thought!

JFR, I take your point about the internet being the place for anonymity, but this is such a tight-knit community that if I don't know someone at least vaguely, it makes me feel a bit uneasy. (That is probably a little irrational, as I have no idea who lurks here, nor whether those people who cannot be vouched for personally are who they say they are.) There are virtually no regulars here I haven't emailed or MSNed or at least communicated with on the board a few times, to the extent that I feel I have some idea of their character and motivation. Generation does tend to affect that. Asking whether someone is "young" or "old" is quite different from asking for specific details about his date of birth, town, school, family status, workplace etc.

That said, if jack does not wish to categorise himself that is his choice. I was not trying to provoke a discussion.

Nope, only a car, I'm afraid, and a small one at that. I've never had an opportunity to race anything. Perhaps I will one day, if a safe (and legal) opportunity comes up.

Jack, if you post, you cannot by definition be a lurker. A lurker reads but does not post. The term's normally derogatory but, as Timmy has said specifically that this board is for lurkers as well as posters, even if you were it would not be a problem.

Best wishes,

David
