Despite being a geek, I've never ventured into the hazardous waters of IRC. Now I've tried, I can see that I was probably very sensible.
Does anyone here ever use it? Are there any communities of proper, intelligent people on IRC, or is it all people with the mentality of children? Is there a single channel for gay people in the vein of this board, where people are interested in more than A/S/L and CAM?
I'm a bit disappointed, because I was under the impression that IRC, as the forerunner of the web-based messageboard systems we see today, would somehow be more dignified than run-of-the-mill web-based chat or MSN-style chatting. How wrong I was!
I do wonder whether if this is the only messageboard of its type in the whole world...

I use it very rarely. Last used it seriously in 1996 I think. It has more weirdos than were on the B Ark

What server did you use? That can make a drastic difference! I only ever hop onto mIRC with an inteded purpose, though. It can hold a wealth of information, and files for that matter. I've never used it as a random chat media, though. I've only ever used it to talk to communities I'm a part of, or to find files.
Look at this tree. I cannot make it blossom when it suits me nor make it bear fruit before its time [...] No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.

Hi Saben,
(A medium. Several media.)
I've tried a couple today. EFNet. DALnet. They were prominent on the list built into the client, so I connected.
Also Freenode (which seems to be good for technical support for open source software).
When I was at school (this was 1999 or 2000) the school had its own IRC server on Phishy.net. A few geeks within the school would talk on that. Mostly we would make fun of the operator, who was a rather peculiar top year.
