What you all think if i changed my major to become a pilot?

So say what you want
(You know I'm wasting all my time)
You've gotta mean it when you say what you want
(You're only safe when you're alone)
And everybody's on your mind
Saying anything to get you by
D'you reckon you'd be accepted?  [message #36879 is a reply to message #36878] Thu, 12 October 2006 03:18 Go to previous messageGo to next message

It's a career that can make lots of money, but do you think that you're cut out for it? I don't know anything about you, except what you've told us on the board, but I read you as pretty impulsive, which isn't perhaps the best characteristic for a pilot!

But, if that's what you want to do, and the course accepts you - go for it, Jay!

But not until you've REALLY convinced yourself that it's not a case of 'the other man's grass is always greener'!

Don't jump before you've figured out the options. We care about you, y'know!

.... if you really want to be a pilot, go for it - but do it because it's what you really want to do, not what you feel you ought to do. That way, you'll be a good pilot, not just an adequate pilot.

What sort of pilot are you thinking of becoming?

I've always been interested in flying, but it has turned out to be difficult for me to get a licence because of my eyesight. I have been told that even my brother (who has near-perfect eyesight) could not be accepted into his university air squadron for the same reason.

You also need perfect health -- you need to be very fit and have a perfect heart; you need a stable personality and temperament; you need to be very responsible and know exactly what to do in the event of a crisis; you need to commit yourself for several years to taking dozens of written exams and practical tests. Becoming a pilot is a decision you cannot take lightly; it has to shape your entire outlook on life. If you're not good enough at any stage, there are any number of people who will be happy to fail you.

I'm not trying to dissuade you -- I'm simply being realistic. If you are willing to devote your every waking hour for several years to flying and reading about flying, by all means go for it -- but I'd recommend thinking about it for a while and making sure, as Cossie pointed out, that it is not simply a case of the grass being greener on the other side. Flying -- either in the airline sector or the air force -- is probably one of the top five careers where you simply cannot mess around or behave recklessly, because other people's lives are at stake. This should be reflected in your behaviour outside the classroom, too -- no more driving vastly over the speed limit!

Incidentally, while I considered becoming an airline pilot years ago, before I realised the magnitude of the problem with my eyesight, now I am content to realise that it is not possible, but that if I work hard in a different industry I might just be able to earn enough money to become a private pilot. There was a glorious period a couple of years ago, before I went back to university, when I was earning just about enough money to have a few lessons.

David

Here, I know of a pilot that flew across the USA and he is only 9 years old........ The cost here in town is about $2,000.00 for the air time required to get one.

It is actually very very easy to get a pilots license it is the commercial license that is rigid in its requirements.....

I also know a few pilots in the commercial industry..... Basicaly, of the 4 I know 3 regret their carreer choice and are currently looking for better work..... The 4th lost his license because of a run in with the law..... Something about not being able to pass the psychological tests after several bouts with traffic court.

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Marc said,

That's really very cheap. It's about three times that plus in the UK, IIRC. Is that the bare, basic airtime or the average airtime, in a hired aircraft or an owned one?

>It is actually very very easy to get a pilots license it is the commercial license that is rigid in its requirements.....

True -- an ordinary person can get a licence if he puts the work in. That said, I understand it is rather easier to get it in America than in the UK: fuel is cheaper and light aircraft are more ubiquitous. The JAA licence rules have been so peculiarly shaken up recently that when I get a PPL I will likely get an FAA one rather than a UK CAA one because of the eyesight regulations.

'Course, if you want to make a career of flying you do need to get half a dozen ratings, keep yourself current, and be assessed pretty much constantly. It's very hard work.

Sorry to bring this one back from the dead. But yesterday I talked to Steve over dinner when we where finished unpacking his dads house. He is a retired Pilot and I was talking about to him what was it like, and how hard it was to get a licenses. He said that he could help if want to go that road. He is also going to let ME take his plane up in two weeks.

Jay,

If you are absolutely keen and determined to take flying not just to PPL, but military or commercial level, and that is what you want to do for the rest of your life, then go for it. I have no doubt that Steve (presumably a retired commercial pilot? what sort?) is able to give better advice on the subject than any of us.

>He is also going to let ME take his plane up in two weeks.

That sounds fun. Good luck! (Presumably he'll be in the left hand seat, though?) What sort of plane does he have?

David

Yes but he is going to let me take off and fly for a bit.

Twin turbo prop, 12 seater
