http://www.itp.net/news/details.php?id=22318 is an article about Saudi Arabia and new laws "to address the rise in electronic crime".

I was ok with that until I read the article in detail: "Creating web sites that defame humanity, advocate drug use or that contain pornographic material can lead to sentences of up to five years in prison and/or a fine of US$1.3million." Ok so far. Then: "The same punishment will also apply to anyone found guilty of creating web sites or programs that violate any of the Kingdom’s general laws, Islamic values or public ethics."

Ok, so $1.3m for those whose ethics are viewed as unsound by this nation that pillories gay men and women. Hmmmmmm.

Well... the answer to that is: don't go to Saudi Arabia. Especially if you happen to be gay or run a site relating to homosexuality.

If they don't like you, I am sure that they could find a law to sentence you under, regardless of whether this particular law has come into force.

Their country..... Their religion..... Their laws.....

I see no problem with them living the way they want.....

The alternitive is always present..... Move to a place more to the individual's liking / needs....

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...
I take your point, Marc ...  [message #37081 is a reply to message #37074] Mon, 16 October 2006 01:05 Go to previous message

... but I suspect that the option may not be readily available to a young, gay Saudi who doesn't have wealth or influence.
