I have deleted the old one from the server, chosen the new one and sent it (96kb), but the old one just appears again. I have tried several times.

Uploading a new one ought to be simple. What happens when you try it? It MAy be that the one you are uploading is simply too large, of course. The software can be mysterious.

The size is 96kb, 2 x 1.5 inches.
I click on "Remove avatar from server". It disappears. I choose the new avatar, a dialogue box comes down and asks "Send file now?" I click ok, the box disappears and the old avatar reappears.

Hugs
N

PS If I cancel "Send file now", a thumbnail of the new avatar appears by 'choose file', but the old one appears when I click 'send file'.

Somewhat bizarre. Try saving it as 72dpi and see what happens then?

It's almost certainly a cache problem. It happens for me whenever I change my avatar. The new file is certainly uploaded, but it has the same name as the old one so the web browser thinks it is the same file and doesn't bother to download the new one. You need to right click on it, open it in a new window ('View image' in Firefox) and then refresh -- or just wait a day or two for the new one to be replaced in your browser's cache.

I don't think DPI has anything to do with it, Timmy.

To be fair I have no idea what affects it. This is one of the inner mysteries of the software. Logic, though, says that cache is not the answer, I think, because the admin screen says that Nigel has no avatar at all. So something is not uploading.

So I have to go back to file size and possibly picture shape. But it says pretty clearly: "The image will be reduced in size to fit into a 64x64 pixel box. The image file must not be bigger than 500kB." so I have no idea.

OK, I see why you say "Cache" because the picture can be cached. I uploaded a nw pic of mine over my avatar. Cache appeared to keep the old one until "Ctrl/refresh" cleared local cache.

Then I deleted the file fomr the server using the button. Picture vanished. "No Picture" in red.

Then I uploaded my old avatar again. The DELETED one flashed before my eyes, and was then replaced by the newly uploaded one.

None of this makes any sense, of couorse.

Without knowing the precise details of your and Nigel's problems, all I can say is that I did have a very similar problem and that was because my computer was caching the image. It went away after I force-refreshed the image or emptied the browser cache.

If that is the problem, it is likely it could be solved by making the forum software aware when a picture has changed, and passing along relevant expiry details to the client to make it refetch it. It might be just a couple of minutes' work for Megaman, if he's familiar with the software -- though of course, depending how complicated it is, it could also take hours...

Deeej, you're a genius. I emptied the cache on my browser and it worked.
