Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

I don't go on holiday. I stay at home and celebrate Christmas. Our holiday season is in the summer.

Hugs

I nearly always have a Christmas tree - have done so ever since I had a place of my own. Very simple, white lights (used to be candles, but switched to electric when my nephew/nieces were small for safety reasons), a very few silver balls, a silver star.

I used to make large batches of mince pies in the week before Christmas (with home-made vegetarian mincemeat) for work Christmas tea. I didn't do so last year, as I wasn't at work, and rather missed it - so I'm contemplating a pre-Christmas tea party for friends ...

I don't usually spend Christmas day itself at home, but with family. However, this year I'm hosting. Some here may remember that my aunt was injured falling off her bike back in the summer, and is now in a Brain Injury Rehab Unit in South London. So the plan is that my mother will stay with me for a few days over Christmas, and will go and fetch my aunt out of the Unit for Christmas Lunch and tea in a no-doubt-expensive minicab, while I cook. It will be a very full traditional turkey lunch, with roast turkey, bacon, saussages, sprouts, roast spuds & parsnips, chestnut stuffing, other stuffing, carrots, redcurrant jelly, bread sauce, etc etc. As part of idea is to help my aunt recover some of the memories she's lost, it needs to feel like her ideal Christmas as much as possible. And, of course, I'm an unashamed romantic traditionalist!

Evening plans involve roasting chestnuts on an open fire (my favourite seasonal treat), before returning my aunt to the Unit.

Holidays are days of special significance....

Vacations are times when we "vacate" our day to day lives and go elsewhere for rest and relaxation.

Nevertheless... I can see from the obstinate air of your reply that I am once again wasting my time yet once again here.......

Well, this year my family is having a Christmas party, which we practically never do; that should be fun (if stressful).

Apart from that, term goes on until the 16th of December, then there's a month of holiday, during which I will have to write 20,000 words or so. Plus we're moving house at the end of January, so there'll be a lot of packing up. I have a suspicion that these holidays will be the least festive so far.

In the UK, "holiday" and "vacation" are considered synonyms. I, for one, am not aware of a distinction between them. On the whole, people over here tend not to use the word "vacation", just "holiday" for both instances.

Normally, Christmas is just called "Christmas", or "the Christmas period". But it is definitely known as the "Christmas holidays" for schools, so I'd be inclined to agree with Marc that it's as much a holiday season as summer.

How does this post spawn a set of threads about vacations versus holidays?

Well, Marc made a distinction, and I pointed out that in the UK (so presumably for Nigel) there is no distinction. I wasn't planning to take that subthread any further.

In a useless, pointless, meaningless attempt to get through the holiday season this year I made a post attempting to open conversation about local customs and events.......

I guess I should have known better.....

scratch that..... I knew better but I thought I would try anyway.....

The experiment proved that it was stupid on my part to trust people not to make fools of others.

The only user who may now edit is me as moderator. I wonder, sometimes, why I bother at all to give people adult rights.

So, one of us has ruined it for all of us

Yes. You edited your post to blank it. You made a total nonsense of any replies. That is a breach of trust given by me and by everyone else.

It was an experiment. It failed.

What is the point of an editing posture if one does not have the right to edit as they see fit?

The point is to make minor editing changes. Spellings and similar items. The point is not to revist old material and remove it.

You know that. Everyone else knows that. Everyone else uses it with respect for other people. You chose not to. This means that I have removed it because of your behaviour

Refer to http://tinyurl.com/uhtdn for my comments at the time.

You really want to know something?

Whenever I see something wrong I always stand alone.....

Whenever I try to do something fun it is belittled and I am made fo feel the fool.......

I just can not win..... nothing new there..... So what is the point of trying anymore... I sure as hell can not see the point in it...

This is about an abuse of a privilege, and getting it withdrawn from everyone because of that.

... with respect, you are over-reacting.

There's too much tension around to make longer-term decisions based on anything which happened today.

I agree entirely that Marc was rather childish in deleting his original post, but it didn't really reflect upon anyone else. As you say yourself, until now the privilege has been used sensibly. I simply cannot see any real justification for 'punishing' all of your posters.

I very much hope that you will think again.

This was a side issue, you know. I would have handled it the same way. But see my response to JFR's request. I am considering reinstating it, and in that thread I simply would like thoughts on the matter.

I accept your apology and assurance.

Please do note: My reaction was entirely impersonal. It was to be removed at the first sign of (choose any phrase to describe an unwise edit) by any poster at all.

What you do not know is that I was always going to remove the facility at the first improper use. I introduced it as an experiment. It would not matter who had been injudicious, this was wholly unrelated to and totally coincident with other matters.

I go a long way back with thoughts over eidting. The search facility will probably find it many years ago, when this iteration of the software was introduced.

JFR has started a thread with some large reference to th ebook of Numbers. I think I'd like people's throughts there prior to reaching any conclusion, please.
