... but in view of the current level of traffic on the board, it's an interesting idea, if it's logistically possible.

Why would we need one? People seem to manage pretty well with all the IMs that are available. (I have never been in a chat room, so pardon my ignorance.)

Huh? Yahoo IM (for example) is not 'in real time'?

We looked at it ages ago. The effort of installing one seems pointless when there are so many instant messaging products about. There seems to be no real point.

On the whole, I'd be a bit worried about a chat room here. There's a bit of a balancing act between what goes on ON the board, which is inclusive, and open to everyone at any time, and the OFF the board private e-mail, IM, and meetings between board participants.

I think a chat room could make it very difficult to keep any kind of balance, and the forum could become too full of references to things discussed elsewhere - this could make some people feel that they are on the margin, or not part of some (imaginary) central group.

There have been a couple occasions in the past where we all have spent a lot of time and energy reassuring people that there is NO hidden "in-group", so perhaps I'm over-sensitive to this risk.

No such thing as a "bad" idea - you keep right on having 'em.

Seriously, there are all kinds of ideas that turn out not to be good to go ahead with for one reason or another, but we never get anywhere if people don't have (and share) ideas in the first place!

The reasons for the message board outweigh any reasons for a chat room.

The site is positioned very much as a site where people can explore their sexual identities. The message board has a long history, and this history allows people to see what has been said in the past.

A chat room is ephemeral. There is no record of chats, and no-one else can benefit from them.

The reason you are here is because, I hope, you find something here that appeals to you. A chat room has no legacy of "appeal" because it is just a chat room.

A chat room brings traffic to a site. But we have plenty of traffic. I can't get my commercial websites to have even a tenth of the traffic we have here. People who need us will find us.
