It was repealed in 2003, fortunately.

No-one was ever prosecuted under it, but it led to a lot of anxiety in the minds of teachers and local government, who felt that they couldn't even discuss the subject of homosexuality in case they were accused of promoting it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28

Incidentally, anyone, am I right in thinking (from that article) that it did not apply in private schools?

It was never supposed to prevent the discussion of homosexuality, or just "being gay" at school. It was the fear factor for school staff that was most damaging. I don't think it affected many schoolchildren; it certainly didn't affect me.

I never asked a staff member about homosexuality so I never got to experience what they would have said. A good number must have been closet homosexuals.

it no longer exists officially.

however, Conservative run Kent County Council attracted a lot of pressure for implementing a similar policy based on section 28, and part of the BNP manifesto involves bringing it back.

I really should take that off the footer of the relevant chapters. So many of us campaigned in different ways.

Deej is almost right. Kent "enacted" its own version after Section 28 was repealed. Obviously there are no gay kids in Kent.

If anyone has any info about Kent that would be great.

I imagine no more than without it. In the main the safety precaurtions are identical, gay or str8. You guys will find a load of stuff on the site about it, if you care to look.

In part that's the reaosn why I created the sex and health information here. I'm not saying that http://iomfats.org/resources/ will tell you everything you need to know, but it will give you a place to start getting simple questions answered.

Ok, you may also know all this already, but a refresher does no harm, especially with things like http://iomfats.org/resources/health/sti/

I am certaily not going to encourage anyone in unlawful activities. The age of consent in the UK is 16 and affects all people younger than this, even if both partners are younger. But it does allow you to gain knowledge, and to do so without needing to be embarrassed in any way

We should all be aware of http://iomfats.org/resources/health/hiv/riskfactors.html too, as a matter of course
