There is someone who used to visit this forum regularly, but has not posted anything here for more than a year. He is now in his mid-70's and he lives in the UK. We met when I was last in the UK, a few years ago.
I spoke to him on the phone a couple of weeks ago: he was awaiting the results of a biopsy on his leg. I spoke to him again today: the biopsy and all the blood tests were OK. Nevertheless, the doctors think that there is something wrong (and threatening) with his leg and in all probability at the beginning of next month he will have his femur (and possibly his knee) replaced with a steel rod.
He signs his posts on this forum as "Mike". Please keep Mike in your thoughts (and in your prayers, if you are that way inclined).
Thanks.

Oh heck. I know him slightly, and yet he is my friend. Mike, you are in my thoughts.
Just think of the havoc you will be able to cause at airport securioty screenings!

Only today I was thinking that tomorrow I should call Mike. But Mike's e-mail has forestalled me. This is what he has written:
My operation completed successfully. Have yet to learn what the biopsy comes up with and if any further treatment is required. I understand in other circumstances I might have had to loose my leg, instead I have a large amount of metalwork replacing the lower part of my femur and knee. Now all I have to do is to learn to walk again! I still have a long way to go. Many thanks for concern and good wishes. I will keep you posted on progress.
This is not going to be easy for a man in his 70's, so please keep him in your positive thoughts.
Good luck, Mike!

Unfortunately, I must report that the biopsy on Mike's leg was not good and the bone was found to be cancerous. Since the bone has already been removed (and replaced by a steel rod) let's hope that the radiotherapy will make sure that none of the cancer is left.

I have posted about this before. Mike is a man who used to post here but recently has fallen ill. He is in his 70's and that's a bad age to have most of your leg removed and replaced with a steel rod. (Is any age good for something like that?) The bone that was removed proved to be cancerous, so Mike needs further treatment. This is what he has written to me:
Leg still v. swollen and difficult to move as the scar tissue along the operation scar is impeding movement round the knee. Hopefully with the excersises it will continue to improve it but is presently proving tiresome and somewhat painful. You may certainly share your concern and all keep your fingers crossed for me!! Today I received the programme for radiotherapy. I go to Birmingham on 26th March for 5 days of concentrated physio. Mornings , hydrotherapy; afternoons in the gym and evenings hydrotherapy again. I stsrt radiotherapy on 3rd April and have to go every day Mon. - Fri. for six weeks. I hope I don't burn up too easily!!
This is going to be a very difficult period for Mike. Everybody, please keep him in your thoughts (and prayers) - and, as he says, keep your fingers crossed for him for a successful outcome.
You can post encouragement for Mike here: he still lurks here

Hi Mike, looks to me that you have a tough time coming up, the surgery can;t have been pleasant, to say the least. The rest is just a process, though exhausting. But you're going to make it. And that's what counts.

As a namesake but ten years your junior, I know a few of the difficulties with problem legs. Some days I wonder how much longer I'll be hanging on to my own stumps!
Mike, you have my deepest sympathy. I know how reduced mobility can make things dificult at our age, and it seems to take forever for things to heal, at least in my case because of the diabetes.
My best wishes for a satisfactory recovery go to you.
