.... 'cos I need your help. Pleeeeease?
Although I use keyboards pretty well all day and every day, I have never aspired to anything more than an acceptable level of incompetence. All the clever stuff scares the hell out of me!
But now my home PC has been invaded by a porn site. Now I know what you're thinking, but you're wrong. It's full of GIRLS. Now why would I have gone looking for a site like that?
It has set itself as my homepage, and it brings with it an entourage of six or seven similar sites, which appear in succession if I try to close the page. I can re-set to my normal homepage (via file-tools-options, etc), but as soon as I close down the porn site reverses the re-set and re-appears on start-up. What do I do? Is there no hope? Is this the end of civilisation as I know it? I can't stand the thought of ploughing through this forest of female appurtenances every time I go on line.
And if I do find a solution, how do I stop it from happening again? I'm desperate. I'll do anything ... well, almost anything ... if only a handsome white knight will charge to my rescue. My life is in your hands!
For a' that an' a' that,
It's comin' yet for a' that,
That man tae man, the worrld o'er

If you've tried to reset by going to:
Tools - Internet Options - and checked
your home page and it still resets on
the porn homepage, you might have a
virus. Try running your Norton or whatever
you have through all your systems. If it
is a virus, it will contain it.
I'll go to a couple of websites that offer
help and see what I can find.
End of civilization ::giggle::

Ewwwwww! Oh wait a minute. I keep forgetting, I'm bi. I actually like girls. So what's the problem? Seriously, though, smith may be right (and from the sound of him, he probably is a handsome white knight, or at least a really cute squire). It could be a virus. Sounds like something has inserted a line into a system file or startup file that is resetting your homepage. Run your anti-virus software and see what it finds.
Think good thoughts,

A friend of mine says you have clicked
on Spyware........
Try this:
go to http://www.download.com
choose adaware by typing it in
download - install - and run
You will have to reset your homepage.
He said that in the course of clicking
off the pop up screens, you accidently
clicked 'yes' to this homepage. It is
called Spyware.
Good luck hug -
smith

Well, I think the best thing to do is to format your computer. It's great!
Well, basically, you have either somehow been infected with a virus (which I doubt), or you have downloaded a progam (or something), which comes with spyware, or something similar. It would have shoved some crap in your system registry files, which is going to be an absolute nightmare to hunt down and get rid of. I'd say, format the computer, then make sure you have all the latest security patches from windowsupdate, then put a firewall on the system like BlackICE Defender or something like that. And don't download any crap anymore. ALSO, you may want to check your Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and if there is something dodgy there, remove it. The likelyhood is that there won't be anything dodgy shown there.
Hmmm, not sure what else... I know I have solved this problem before, because I found exactly what the problem came from, and there were things on the internet which told you how to get rid of them.
Best of luck old bean!
Dan.

I had something like this happen once and I had to remove a device that was getting booted up on my system.
I located it by running the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and doing an internet search on every application running on my system. One of them is a nasty.
Good luck!!!

I don't know if this helps, but try uninstalling internet explorer: Control panel -> add/remove programs -> Microsoft Internet ...
Remove it.
Then download the latest version from http://www.microsoft.com and reinstall.
Cheers and good luck in getting those nathty female thlusts off your screen.

I don't think that's an option. At least in Win98SE you can't uninstall Internet Explorer, since it's integrated to Windows (unless I'm entirely wrong...?). Atleast not through Add/remove programs.
But Cossie could always stop using Explorer and start using something nice like Mozilla. Or Netscape Navigator, if one wants better support to plugins (shockwave ect.) and stuff. Netscape is nowadays based on mozilla, so in theory mozilla can use netscape's plugins, but it doesn't always work. Works OK most of the time, but every now and then...
Reinstalling Internet Explorer might help (don't really think so but you never know... ).
Then searching the registry for the first pornsite's address might be fruitfull, but dabling with the registry is always a bit risky. But try if you like... (Select Start\Run... => type regedit => Edit\Find => type the address => Click Find Next => Wait. depending on the speed of your computer, it could be several minutes.) I _think_ you can safely remove any keys (entries) that contain the site's address.
Just a thought that struck me, what can one do with cookies? Have you tried deleting everything in/under C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files?
And of course, formatting your harddrive and installing Windows all over again WILL help. Just remember to back up everything important... And just like Dan said: It's great fun.
Well, that's everything I can think of, in addition to the suggestions in here. Good luck!

Sad to hear that nothing's worked out. Nothing worse than a computer full of naked girls. Now a HOUSE full of naked girls, on the other hand, well hell, on BOTH hands and everywhere in between... but I digress. Call your ISP. Talk to tech support. They may be able to tell you where to find the problem and how to fix it. If that doesn't work, then try reinstalling IE. If all else fails, back up your data files and reformat your disk drive. When all else fails, sometimes you just have to punt.
Oh, I just had one other idea. Send a very nasty email to the porn sites and threaten them with legal action if they don't tell you how to fix it. Perhaps you can even find out who's hosting their sites and inform their provider of their actions. They may actually end up getting shut down. Your ISP may be able to help you with this, if they are so inclined.
Think good thoughts,

Excellent idea Setras! Cookies are not only found at C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files, but also at C:\Windows\Cookies. Of course you may want to keep some of these cookies because they contain information used by some of the sites you visit, but frequently the name of the site can be found in the filename of the cookie. For instance default@iomfats[1] is the name of the cookie Tim's site has deposited on my computer. Wouldn't want to delete that one now would we?

God-DAMMIT! I'm going NUTS because of this virus! (Which was appointed the world's most wide-spread a little while ago.) I get at least two virus mails every day to my hotmail account (today I think I've killed at least three), I can't be in THAT many people's address books, can I?
(Then again, I heard Klez can scan through the web-browser's cache for addresses too so maybe that's why I get so many of them...)
Sigh, why can't people install a virus killer and keep it updated?!? I hope nobody here is eating stupid-pills and NOT having virus protection?

Norton Anitvirus program and tossed it on
my desk meaning to do it, then forgot.
Lenny........I owe you one !! Thanks for
the whack up the side of my head

...Is perfectly illustrated by the Klez-mail I just got (second, maybe third today; shows my stories are popular I guess, lol).
The subject line (which the virus extracts at random from the user's harddrive) read: "And flops out.....we both sigh......fall asleep". Cutting and pasting that into Google produces this: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&querytime=Fx2WjB&q=And+flops+out%2E%2E%2E%2E%2Ewe+both+sigh%2E%2E%2E%2E%2E%2Efall+asleep+
You INSTANTLY know where the sender has been on the web. And... He had been reading naughty stories as it turns out!
This time this mail got sent to me, a total stranger. But maybe it could have gone to a friend instead, maybe even a family member. One of his children perhaps if he has any. How fun would that be, on a scale of one to ten?
Virus killers are GOOD. Virus killers are our friends...
By the way smith, what did you think of that weblink I sent you?
