If so it was a very backward invention, unlike the garden shed, whcih allows men to get away from their wives whenever they need to.

I suspect that the reason golf was invented in St Andrews was that no garden shed could possibly be expected to stand up to the howling gales from the East that one gets for around 300 days a year!

Golf does not completely exempt inhabitants of St Andrews from a wifely presence - the links are common ground, and in theory the wives of inhabitants can dry their washing on certain areas .... although whether washing could reasonably be expected not to blow away is debatable.

I used to live and work about 15 miles from St Andrews ... ugh I hate the East Coast wind!
