I am sorry we have not heard from your friend in India. I hope he is ok and not in trouble. I have been told by a friend who owns a store (he is Indian) That it is not only illegal to perform a homosexual act, but it is illegal to BE Homosexual. I know there was a big to do about some prince comming out.

Ah my friend from India is from Bangladesh. While this might seem a small distinction, and only as different as Wales is from England, Bangladesh has a proud history as a separate nation. There are many cultural similarities to India, and substantial cultural differences.

I know he is reading the board. Sometimes it takes a while to get up enough courage to ask or to answer questions.

I am unsure of the legal status in Bangladesh of being homosexual and of acting according to one's orientation, so some research lies ahead of my friend before he does anything that may cause him social and legal challenges.

Prior to being Bangladesh, the nation was East Pakistan. As usual http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangladesh is a mine of information, though Wikipedia is not always wholly accurate.

This stoked my curiosity and so I did some research on gay Bangladesh. These two news articles seem to sum up what I uncovered. The articles are somewhat dated (2003) but I imagine are still germane.

[Violent sexual abuse stoking AIDS in Bangladesh GAY.COM Wednesday 20 August, 2003 10]
Police officers who are raping gay men are stoking an emerging AIDS epidemic in Bangladesh, according to a new report. From Human Rights Watch, the report documents rapes, gang rapes, beatings and abductions by officers, who also attack sex workers and drug users - themselves at high risk from HIV.

[Sydney Star Observer April 16, 2003 ADAM CARR (bnews)]
One of the less pleasant legacies of British rule is Section 377 of the Penal Code, which provides: "Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life." Bangladesh lawyers, however, say this law is a dead letter. "The instances of prosecution under this section are extremely rare," writes one lawyer.
Islamist groups funded from Saudi Arabia are campaigning for the introduction of shari'a law, which has historically been unknown on the Indian subcontinent. Gay men will be obvious victims of this trend, which is being resisted only fitfully by Bangladeshi politicians fearful of offending Islamic sentiment. Recently the United States granted political asylum to a Bangladeshi gay man who was, he said, threatened with stoning by Islamic fundamentalists. The man also reported being raped by police, forced into electroshock treatment and ordered by his family to enter into an arranged marriage.

This part has never sat well with me:

"He's gay!"

"Let's rape him, then!"

"Does that make us gay, too?"

"No, it just gives the queer what he wants."

So, totally logical there, then.
