Last night, for no apparent reason other than that I bought several small, low value items in quick succession, and sent a request to a seller for one of those items requesting a refund, Paypal and Ebay have decided that I am a fraudster and have shut down my account. They have also contacted all of the parties with whom I have had a recent transaction to tell them that I am suspicious. (Isn't that libel?)

Quite how I match the profile of a scammer I do not know, but of course they wouldn't actually *tell* me.

Into the bargain, the ebay password reset feature, which I have been told to use, does not seem to work.

What a waste of time. It's taken me three quarters of an hour to sort this out so far and I still haven't got full access to my account yet. Bastards.

They need to send me a letter before they will unblock the account. It will take 8 to 10 days and it will go to my parents' address, where I will not be at the time. They will not unblock my recent payments until then.

What a marvellous way to piss off your customers!

They are a monopoly, regrettably. No-one can set up a business to challenge them, and they make all the rules. And contacting them ny phone is either impossible or fruitless.

Hmm. It does appear to be libellous in that it is defamatory. But, to pursue a libel you must have pockets deep enough to be able to lose and pay their costs.

Do you believe that you were entitled to a refund?
Their rules are pretty clear regarding this.
If it was only for a low value item, why bother?

Deeej, I dont know about Britain, but here in the states a lawyer would take the case on commission. That way you dont spend any money and the lawyer gets paid after the settlement. It is an untruth and they have made public atatements so they are vulnerable to a law suit.

I was entitled to a refund. I was dealing with a UK company, and thus they are subject to UK distance-selling regulations.

I'm going to have to look very closely at my credit card bill, because eBay may or may not have taken the money from my card. If they have, they seem to be holding onto it as the seller claims they haven't received the money. I hope that the money isn't just going to disappear into the aether (read: eBay's coffers). If it does, I will get very angry.

It's not worth the hassle over £5.98 worth of goods. I'll be upset but it won't affect my quality of life if I never see it back again.

I expect eBay count on people saying that.

Oh, and "suspicious activity on the account" doesn't always imply that I'm the one who is suspicious -- even though it does mean that in this case, as I'm the only one who's been using it! I've had Paypal and eBay accounts for donkey's years and my feedback is perfect. They evidently think someone else has cracked my account, and would no doubt use that as an excuse if it ever got to court.

It's embarrassing to have to explain to the sellers of the other items that the reason they haven't received the money is that Paypal thinks I'm a fraud.

If it does then you issue a summons in the small claims court and get it back that way.

I've used it and it's very good. Several computer retailers are offering £10 off if you spend £30 or more, so I've place three orders now that all coincidentally happened to be for just over £30 ...

Unfortunately ebay has a monopoly, and they make it very easy to pay by paypal (which makes them a lot of money) and much harder to pay through anyone else (which doesn't).
