Over the next few days, it was becoming obvious that something was wrong with Joe. He didn't talk to anyone in class, and he didn't talk to Matthew either. He kept going over things in his head as he was thinking all the time, since he got that kiss from Matthew. He wouldn't admit it, but he was worried.
It scared him to think of what exactly it was that they had. In a way, even thoough he was happy around Matt, he was scared. It scared him, and he'd cry a lot in his bed at night, wondering if he was going to see Matthew again. He was depressed. He missed him, but he was scared to get close to him again. He put up a barrier between himself and Matt, so if they saw eachother, he wouldn't say anything.
Matthew knew his friends worry was concerning him. Every time he would try to get close to him, Joe would back away. What was he scared of? He didn't talk to him in class, cause he didn't want to bother him, tho it saddened Matt, to see his friend like this.
'Joe?' Matthew said as he approached his friend outside the school grounds.
Joe started to walk away from him, when Matt caught his hand and held it.
'What's wrong? You've been avoiding me since we were at your apartment.' Matt said with concern.
Joe knew he was avoiding him. It was hard. He didn't know what to do with himself... He kept thinking about Matt since it happened. He admitted to himself that he liked it.. But he wouldn't put it into words... He stopped figiting, and looked at his friend. Tears started to form in his eyes.
'What's wrong...' Matt said. 'You can tell me..'
Joe dried the tears from his eyes. 'It's just hard...'
Matt was relieved that his friend finally spoke. 'What's hard?'
'This...' Joe tugged at his friends shirt. 'Being with you... Feeling like this..' Joe started to cry again. 'It's so hard..'
Matt took hold of his friend and pulled him into a hug. 'It's okay....'
'It's just that... I like you..' Joe said as he cried. 'I like you, and it's wrong.. I can't feel this way about you.. But I do, and I dont know why, and it scares me...'
Matt ran his fingers through Joe's hair as he spoke.
'So... let's not... I like you a lot, Matt, but it's hard..' Joe said. 'My parents keep asking me whats wrong, and I cant tell them its cause i'm thinking about you.. It would hurt them too much..'
'It's okay..' Matt said, consoling him. 'My parents ask me the same thing.'
'What?...'
'They ask me why i'm always late for supper. They know something's distracting me. I just don't tell them...'
'Matt... am I a freak?' Joe asked Matt, tears still coming out of his eyes.
'No.' Matt smiled. 'You're not a freak. You're not different. You're just you.'
This made Joe smile and stop crying. He was happy that Matt was his friend, happy he was with him, even if it meant being in love. He never really thought about it, but maybe this was what it was like. It made him smile.
'Thanks.' Joe said, wiping the tears from his eyes.
'No problem.' Matt said smiling.
'Oh, one last thing.' Joe said.
Before Matt could respond, Joe pulled him into another kiss. It was a sweet one, gentle. Their lips parted a second time.
'That's for being with me, you know' Joe said smiling.
'I know.' Matt took Joe's hand into his own. 'Here, I'll take you to my place to celebrate.' He smiled.
'Okay.' Joe said.
He was happy. As long as he was with Matt, he was happy, and safe, he felt.
The two of them walked to Matt's house, hand in hand...
