But this one is a little more tame.....

Music...???...

What are young people listening to today???

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

I'm not looking for personal choices.....

I need an overview if what is currently popular for young people.

It depends on nationality, age, background, personal taste. You can't lump all the young people in the world into one homogenous mass.

If you want a vague idea, I would suggest you look at the pop charts and sales by demographic. but they are always changing and it's unlikely that any one person would like everything that is popular within his or her age group.

indie rock music is especially popular, though i for one couldn't give you many examples of it.

dance/club music is also in a popular phase as well

as a suggestion though, just take a look at the charts... the UK singles chart is a good cross section of what people are buying, and most singles buyers are young people. Even better would be the downloads chart, which is almost exclusively young people

In Australia, most High Schoolers listen to either rap/ hip-hop, "emo" and at times hardcore music, pop music, or rock. The first 2 genres are often mocked, but their popularity continues. From looking at the US charts, rap/ hip-hop is even more popular than here. But I'd think anyone non-conformist would probably be more into the emo/ hardcore scene- conforming through non-conformity- "I'm different, just like my friends". Some people listen to no music at all. People that don't fit in usually just follow their own tastes.

In terms of basic pop music, the charts are good. The rap/ hip-hop stuff is pretty "straight", though. In Australia it's the ethnics- Italians, Lebanese, Greeks, etc that mostly listen to it. In America, the black and wigga population mostly, I'm guessing.

Oh, and if you want to see what current teens are into- check out MySpace. Most people on that have music playing on their homepage.

Some people have their profiles set to private, but a lot don't. Spending some time on MySpace is a great way to get acquainted with current youth culture.
