I'm guessing he lost his virginity. If not that, then a bag of flour.

Okay, again without Google help.

Jackson lost his arm at the battle of Chancellorsville from being shot by mistake by his own troops. He also lost his life, which of course is way more permenent, a few days later because he contracted pneumonia. This I do know.

And what's wrong with you may I ask? Why isn't your precious ass in school where it, and the rest of you, belongs?

Surely it's fair for us Olde Worlde people, who've never studied American history, to use Google?

In any case, I am long past the stage that I can answer a question without the Internet. I need to check Google to remember my postcode. And I send myself emails telling me to take the washing out of the washing machine.

I'm pretty sure in the long history of Her Majesty's Forces there have been incidents of friendly fire someplace in the Empire. Battles are not logical exercises and military personnel are as subject to confusion, panic and disorientation as anyone else. Especially when the enemy is trying to kill them.

And let's not forget that large portions of the world still regard Great Britain as an oppressor state, and the most dangerous nation on Earth.

And also let's not forget that when the people of the United States were coming to the rescue of Great Britain in 1917, and again in 1941, nobody in your country was calling us the most dangerous nation in the world.

And when we took your children into our own homes when you sent them to protect them from the bombings, and we fed them and clothed them and educated them like they were our own, nobody called us the most dangersous nation on earth.

And when we fed you, and helped rebuild Europe after the war, nobody was calling us the most dangerous nation then either.

No doubt about it. We've made, and are still making, some serious policy blunders. But when there's a disaster anywhere on Earth, the American people dig deep and give generously, and we're the first country people look to for help.

To quote another Englishman all the Earth respects...

"Then came the majestic policy of the President and Congress of the United States in passing the Lease-Lend Bill, under which, in two successive enactments, about £3,000,000,000 was dedicated to the cause of world freedom, without -- mark this, because it is unique -- without the setting up of any account in money. Never again let us hear the taunt that money is the ruling power in the hearts and thoughts of the American democracy. The Lease-Lend Bill must be regarded without question as the most unsordid act in the whole of recorded history"

Sir Winston Churchill

When your grade average is as high as mine missing a day aint nothen. I could miss 6 weeks, not study, stay home playing with myself and still have a 4.0 average. The school I attend requires that you maintain a 3.5 average or your gone. All the courses here earn college credit. When I graduate the diploma I get will get me in any state college without question.

Not fussin or nothen but when your sick your sick and running a fever for me aint just a little thing. Plus if I got something I dont want to spread it around.

Er, you do know Timmy was joking, right?

The extent of American involvement in Europe over the 20th century is undeniable, but your patronising attitude and use of rhetoric is insulting. The generosity of your country in the past, under another government, does not necessarily reflect the attitude of the current administration. The United States is a large and wealthy country -- the wealthiest in the world -- but that does not mean that the citizens and governments of other countries are not as generous, or, for that matter, more world-aware than those in the US.

It's perfectly possible to take 'the most dangerous nation on Earth' as a compliment. In military firepower, defence spending and so on, the US is far beyond any other country. That is not necessarily a bad thing for a country as closely allied as the UK.

The problem, Deej, with irony, is the irony of irony. Ah the irony!

A French gentleman named Chauvin liked Napoleon a lot. But I wonder if the irony of that would be lost were you to refer to it?

Or should I just say "Late, as usual" to our ex colonial cousins?

This was the posting that I responded to, and I think I can be forgiven for reading it literally and taking it for the insult to my country I think it was meant to be, irony or no irony, back peddling and explaining notwithstanding.

Just remember that the most dangerous nation on earth used to be one of our colonies. It has very little actual history, but it makes kids take exams in it. So they have to kind of dig stuff up.

It's always worth remembering that we celebrate Thanksgiving on July 4th.

To make that kind of statement about the history of my country over the two hundred plus years we've been in existance is the same as if I had said "The United Kingdom and the British Empire have had very little history since we left them, but they still make kids take exams in it."

If you celebrate our independence as something to be thankful for, why did you put us through six years of war to gain it from you? Or was that statement ironic too?

And as far as helping Britain in the past and under pervious administrations, I seem to have heard that just before I was born we helped you with that mess Argentina caused down in the Falklands? Oh, and that was under the Reagan administration, which was the training ground for the present administration.

As a liberal I wouldn't have voted for either of those administrations, and I'm against the present involvement in Iraq and if anything I'm leaning more towards isolationism.

But in spite of all that, I say with all my heart, God Save The Queen, a long life and a happy reign to Her Majesty.

And no, that wasn't being ironic.

Hmm. Methinks you don't know enough about British culture or British humour, nor do you know Timmy. It may surprise you to know that there is virtually no genuine anti-American feeling in the UK. American culture is enormously prevalent internationally, and since the US is regarded as having strong historical links with the UK, it is common for people to make teasing remarks about aspects of its culture that differ from ours. This is not out of resentment or envy but (dare I say it) something approaching fondness. You would have to go considerably further east to find common anti-American feeling. And I don't mean France either.

One thing is for certain: it would be silly to take everything that everyone says on this board at face value. People banter and make jokes all the time, and it would be a shame to miss them all.

You queried,
>It's always worth remembering that we celebrate Thanksgiving on July 4th.

saying,
>If you celebrate our independence as something to be thankful for, why did you put us through six years of war to gain it from you? Or was that statement ironic too?

It's certainly a joke. If you knew anything about British culture you would know that we don't have Thanksgiving, nor do we celebrate Independence Day. The 4th of July passes entirely without note.

>To make that kind of statement about the history of my country over the two hundred plus years we've been in existance is the same as if I had said "The United Kingdom and the British Empire have had very little history since we left them, but they still make kids take exams in it."

Yes, and? However I look at it, I can't see that statement as insulting. Relatively speaking, it's true -- 200 years is (for instance) less than a third of the time my school has been in existence. I'd only find it insulting if I were insecure about the subject, for some reason.

>And as far as helping Britain in the past and under pervious administrations, I seem to have heard that just before I was born we helped you with that mess Argentina caused down in the Falklands? Oh, and that was under the Reagan administration, which was the training ground for the present administration.

In terms of supplies, yes. The US and the UK are historical allies, and still are as much as ever. (In case you didn't notice, the US and UK shared intelligence and went to war in Iraq together.) But how is that relevant? You don't need to prove that the US has helped the UK in the past, as it is a matter of fact.

I think you need to think more about 'irony' in this context. Not just in the original post but also in your reaction to it.
