Do you suppose that Sir Michael John Gambon, who portrays the man in the movie, was told this beforehand? It may come as a shock to him!

God, I had to check to make sure it wasn't April.
How disappointing.
I think it is really a private joke she is making in response to all the gay fan-fiction out there slashing all characters BUT Dumbledore.
Look at this tree. I cannot make it blossom when it suits me nor make it bear fruit before its time [...] No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.

Well, it looked pretty obvious to me. But what do I know!

I really meant that it was surprising that Rowling made it known.
I wondered when reading the books, but I don't think Dumbledore's sexuality can be said to be "obvious". All the evidence of the books is that there are no gay people in the Harry Potter universe, or, more accurately, that no-one identifies as "gay" or appears to follow what we would identify as a "gay lifestyle".

Saben hit the nail on the head; JKR has quite a sense of humour when speaking, and this is almost certainly a joke derived exactly as Saben suggests - and it seems to have worked!
