... a room in a shared flat in London (or any other large city)?
I've just started a job in White City (West London) and the daily 3 to 4-hour commute is taking its toll. I've asked a couple of people and they've made some useful suggestions (the internal company magazine, old school friends) but I was wondering if there's anything I should bear in mind, aside from the obvious (avoid sociopaths, remain within budget, etc.). I've never shared a flat before, except university accommodation.

Gumtree is very popular among young gay londoners, though it isn't a specifically gay site. http://www.gumtree.com
Apart from that, have a think about household chores - some flatshares operate strict rotas for hoovering / cleaning the bath etc, some are more casual but amicable, and in some it's a perpetual source of tension.
Hope the job is going well!

I believe there are organisations that help put you in touch with people with a spare room. Try googling for flat-sharers. Small ads in local papers are also a good bet, but I'd look in the samll ads in the gay (or gay-friendly such as Tome Out) press if I were looking now.
I'm really glad I don't have to live in or near London any more.
