I'm sorry,
But whenever i read a title or header that says, "What really happened dig this"
Does not tell me that this carries much weight.
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

I think I've never yet understood what one is giving the thanks for. Ok I tease you guys that we hold ours on 4th July, and some people even believe me, but I know you take the season seriously, and I appreciate that. So what do you give thanks for, formally, I mean?

When we lived in London we celebrated the 4th of july every year..... much to the annoyance of the neighbors.....

When I was young, the family was intact and Gramma always presided over the meal.....
We gave thanks for family, peace, and for the fact that we could be together.....
Later, I gave thanks for the person I loved more than anything..... Gramma celebrated with us when she could..... For us when she couldnt.....
She passed away the february preceding our moving to London.....
After that Rick and I celebrated as best we could, we always had an open house policy at the holidays.....
Now, I spend Thanksgiving, as well as all the other holidays alone.....
Whatever......
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Hi
Life changes sad things happen, but then you get nice things happen.
Life is about change, ie the seasons change, we go through winter and darkness, but then we get the sunshine. i think you know what i mean.
I f i feel sad i now look at the things in life, and think of the purpose.
Its about hooks you have to know when to grab one, if you don't then you have to wait for the opportunity to come around again.
Just my observation of life.
life is to enjoy.

Every community has its myths and legends, and so long as they aren't damaging to others, they do little harm - and probably quite a bit of good. We Brits have our fair share - King Arthur, Robin Hood and dozens more. Most probably existed at one time or another, but many of the stories about them are pure fable.
Thanksgiving Day isn't celebrated here, except (as Timmy has said) on July 4, when we give thanks for getting rid of those pesky Americans! But it seems to me to be a pretty good reason for a celebration, especially as it has developed into a 'family gathering' kind of occasion, justifying long journeys, just to be with 'family' on the day. I'm lucky - in a way; I'm the only survivor ov what was once a large extended family, but our kids would never desert us ar Christmas. Something like Thanksgiving Day would be a great addition to the Brit bank holidays.
I was a Boy Scout in my teens, and loved it. I particularly loved the Scout Gang Shows, and when I became a Scout Leader I organised trips to Gang Shows over the length and breadth of the country. At the time, there was a lot of support for such things, and songs from Gang Shows were often available as recordings. I remember, in my late twenties, buying a recording of American Gang Show songs, which included a track called 'Thanksgiving Day', which began:
For the days, and years that are to be;
For our lives, where everyone is free.
For our work, and happy hours of play,
This is our Thanksgiving Day.
It moved me then; it moves me now - and the singer had the most gorgeous boy alto voice I have ever heard.
Back in the UK, my fave Gang Show song was:
I used to look for rainbows, way up in the sky -
Yet never seemed to get very near,
And all the things worth having were passing me by -
But now I've a better idea!
Let us live for today while we're here in the sun,
For after all is said and done -
These are the times we shall dream about, and we'll call them the Good Old Days!
When the years have rolled away, we shall dream of the times we had; the songs we used to sing -
So while we're together, let us laugh at the weather and whatever the Gods may bring,
But remember fellas!
These are the times we shall dream about, and we'll call them the Good Old Days!
And, believe me, that is so bery, very true.
So, having established my credentials as an incurable romantic, I really don't see the harm in a 'pretend' interpretation of history - unless, as I said above, it's damaging to someone else. But I'm still on the mailing list of a guy called Gary (who used to post here as 'Navyone'), and his recent mailings have included a substantial number of Thanksgiving Day cards.
As long as Thanksgiving is concerned with 'Be thankful for ... the things you got! (that's lifted from a song in a film musical, but dammit, I can't remember which one!), I'm all for it. But as soon as you begin to give thanks for 'This wunnerful country of ours', you MAKE it political - and so many of the cards do precisely that.
But Jonny's tongue was firmly in his cheek (at least, I HOPE that's where it was!) when he started this thread, so let's all join in an international, non-denominational expression of thanks for having the opportunity to post here, and for the friends we find by doing so.
For a' that an' a' that,
It's comin' yet for a' that,
That man tae man, the worrld o'er
Shall brithers be, for a' that.

If there is.... Could you make it?
I don't see a problem with the conversation here.....
