The Summer Story contest a few years back was amazing, I thought. It not only gave a challenge to the creativity of the regulars and writers who come to your site, but it exploded with some very memorable stories. And while we all have our favorites, it's good once in a while to snap the strings and see where the chalk lines fall (sorry, yet another in a long run of construction worker humor that has not yet run its course in me).
So, I propose, if we can get some interest, a contest similar to how you ran the Summer Story program. The twist this time will be one that seems not only vexing but should stir up some very intersting discussion. As a theme for the contest, I propose that the writers who want to throw in a submission take a good hard look at their music collection, find one song that they are quite possibly embarrassed to admit is a favorite, for whatever reason may be, and base a story off the song, either the title, lyrics or just the mood and story the song brings out.
Just as a quick way of explanation, I listen to a certain morning show. They are a crew of cut-ups and wiseguys, and they often give each other hell, as good friends will. They started a friendly rivalry sort of competition, and kept each other honest about it. They made mixed CD's of their favorite guilty pleasure music. The sort of songs that everyone keeps tucked away in the back of the CD rack so that no one else will know they actually like something that might not be popular anymore or just seems lame. After all, there's no accounting for tastes. It was a funny bit on the radio, and it made me think that it could be a interesting way to get stories jumpstarted. I use music a lot myself when writing, and often put on some rather ecclectic mixes of my own, with modern and classic rock being in the fore.
So, what do you guys think? Any ideas?

It's a good idea. If we like it then it will take a little time to get the infrastructure into place. I'm a little hard pressed still at present

Hey D' ~
I can be driving along listening to the radio and the line of a song will grab at me making a whole new story pop.
"Well, I'm standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
And such a fine sight to see ~
It's a boy, my lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me."
Another contest might be fun! There are alot of guys out there who've told me they have a story they want to tell ....

Hiya Jamie,
Yeah, well, when I originally wrote Coupe I had a set of songs in mind. Things I've always loved and things that were on the radio at the time. So I made a CD of them and listened to it a lot. I've since lost track of that original CD (things just grow feet around my room, I guess) and I've started making others. You and I had a quick talk back when you wrote "Turn Around Bright Eyes" from that Bonnie Tyler song I love so much. I actually do call my BF "Bright Eyes" sometimes, and he blushes immensely. It's cute in its own way, LOL.
But anyways, I'm in the middle of gathering up some songs for new mix CD's myself. Got to have driving music for when I'm out on the roads late, delivering newspapers. But something in what you just wrote caught my eye. Something that I do and always just assumed that other people do too. Change genders and/or names in songs to make them "gay friendly" especially while driving. I nearly shot tonic out my nose when I read that you do that too.
Anyways, stay warm out there in cold county. I'm reading your new stuff here, btw and I am, as always, impressed. You definitely have the gift, my friend. Keep on ridin', Cowboy.
See ya on the other side,
Robby.
PS: yes, there are new chapters for Riposte in the works, including a new twist that I think many of you wont expect. Hopefully, parts of it'll be good and ready for a massive E-mail to Timmy soon.

The last contest was a hoot!!! I had great fun both writing and reading.....
If we do do a do... could we do the do when we do have more time?
Like summertime??? Lotsa time in the summer... no time when schooling...
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Seems to me that the summer works for everyone, except in Oz and NZ when it isn't

Got an idea for the contest title too, following my idea above. Songbook. Simple, to the point and descriptive.
Yea's? Nay's? Comments?

Snowhopper...
You are very welcome. I saw it as a very practical name change. As I said, I am working in Florida, and while you may have been a Grasshopper here, I am quite convinced there is not even a hint of grass where you are, as not much grows in the Tundra!!! Snow, however, is abundant. You must change with your surroundings. Hence... Snowhopper. Should you not finish JHS though, we may all come hunt you out and drop a new Mac Airbook in your lap to encourage you!!!!!!
Hope all is well with you.
