Dear Roger,
Yes it is. What makes you doubt it?
Society has a long way to go to accept it though. For example during my seven years as a governor in my local secondary school, out of over a hundred teachers none was willing to come out of the closet, there is no GSA and a very common term of abuse in the playground is 'gay'. And this is one of only two half decent state schools (out of over 20 - none of the others comes up to the national average!)in Bristol which is a city of over half a million people with an active gay community with several gay bars and shops.
Love,
Anthony

Technically, what is legal in Britain is "Civil Partnership". Most people are happy to call it gay marriage, but it does differ from marriage in a couple of respects that affect a minority of gay men and lesbians.
the actual partnership CANNOT take place in a venue that is used for religious worship (the Quakers are becoming increasingly vocal about this continuing discrimination)
the procedures about a a person from the UK entering a CP with someone who does not have UK residence rights are slightly different from those applying to a marriage
some other countries do NOT regard a CP as an equivalent to marriage, so gay/lesbian couples CP'd in the UK and gone abroad for any reason may not have the same rights as a gay/lesbian couple who had married in that country. (The recent difficulties with Spain over this have been resolved, and a UK CP is now accepted as an equivalent of a Spanish marriage).
Interestingly, the official UK government to Civil Partnership suggests that "traditional family names such as "mother-in-law", "brother-in-law", "step-daughter" should be interpreted to include relationships which arise as a result of civil partnership. For example, the brother of a person who has entered into a civil partnership becomes the brother-in-law of that person's civil partner". (see http://www.womenandequalityunit.gov.uk/civilpartnership/cpguide2005.pdf )
Despite a couple of niggles with some details, it has been a truly massive and liberating step forward here!

Gay partnership or civil union was introduced in Norway in 1993, and we are now moving ahead, http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article2313762.ece
The opposition to gay marriage seems to be fading away, and even in parts of our "Bible belt" there is now a majority in favour of giving gay couples the right to marry and to be the legal parents of adopted children. Protest groups are expressing frustration about the very limited support they are receiving from church and community leaders and from the public in general. Everyone expects the bill to pass, maybe with the amendments mentioned in the news article, and there are priests who are more than ready to welcome gay and lesbian couples to be married in their churches.

The reason I am asking about gay marrage in Britain is that a friend of mine has been talking to a boy in London. He told my friend that gay marrage was not legal in England. This has made me somewhat suspicious of the guy. He claims he is an american who went to London to live with a guy there. He lived with the guy for about a year and the guy died. He claims he is running out of money and is eatting only one meal a day and is getting despirate. My friend is thinking of sending him some money. I would sure like to be able to prove who this guy is befor my friend gets ripped off.
I have asked some people I know to see what they could find out. Roger posted this for me cause neither one of us was sure about gay marrage in England. The guy in London said that gay marrage was not legal and that kinda threw things off.
Id just like to find out if the guy is for real or not. My friend talks to him on Yahoo and his screen name is John Cahill. If this guy is not real I dont want my friend getting ripped off.

As a general rule, NEVER EVER send money in circumstances like this. It sounds like a variant on the Russian Bride Scam, and is a form of advance fee fraud.
If this boy is really in trouble he can go to the US Embassy, or as an emergency to Social Services. We do not let people starve.

Dear Curtis,
How right you are! Either he's extremely ignorant or is deceiving your friend.
I'm very suspicious.
I wonder if it would be possible to get somebody in London to act as intermediary - maybe someone at the Stonewall Lobby Group (I bet you can find it on Google).
Maybe they won't do anything themselves but might point you at someone. Maybe gay switchboard would help. Is the guy a US citizen? Maybe the embassy or consulate would be willing to confirm or deny things about him.
As I'm well over a hundred miles from London I can't do much myself without getting a lot of details from you: I will, if you can't find someone better.
Love,
Anthony

Errr...... it is simple math....
If he is that hungry ie should use the money he is spending for his internet connection and buy some beans......
For that matter he could sell his computer as well......
This is a rip off.....
Your friend would be best served to cut and run.....
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Curtis, I have seen the name John Cahill on another forum. Two people warned that he was a hacker and an identity thief and another that he was a scammer. Warn your friend not to get mixed up with this guy and to think back as to what information he may have sent him.

Curtis, this is as timmy says a pretty old scam.
Nevertheless, if your friend is really worried, and there's been nothing to make them suspicious, I'd be prepared to offer to meet the alleged boy in London, with a couple of provisos
I obviously wouldn't go alone, but would take a friend.
The meeting would have to be in a public and gay-friendly place, such as the First Out Coffee Bar in St Giles High Street, or the Costa Coffee in Old Compton Street
I can't meet before Saturday due to work committments
and I really don't want to directly have any electronic contact with this alleged boy: I don't want to directly exchange e-mails or IM details etc.
I am 100% certain that no-one would show up ...
