The UK Home Secretary, Jaqui Smith, has granted political asylum to a 19 year old Iranian who is afraid to return home. In 2005 Mehdi Kazemi arrived in London to study English. His lover, still in Iran, was arrested and hanged for being homosexual.
But I don't understand how this could be: only last year the Iranian president told the American people that there were no gays in Iran.

The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

Dear JFR,
While giving asylum she is also seeking powers to lock up anyone she declares to be a 'terrorist suspect' for 56 days without charge. Our freedoms are being damaged more by this government than any other within living memory.
I should describe it as extreme right wing. She is a worse home sectretary than Michael Howard - and that's saying something.

While they have been damaged, it does no harm to applaud a sensible deed at the same time as deprecating other policies

Dear Anthony,
I appreciate what you are saying, but nevertheless I would ask how you would suggest a modern democratic state should combat world terrorism? (This is not at all meant to be a provocative question, but a serious one.)
My original commendation was, of course, concerning the asylum granted to a gay person whose partner had been hanged just because he was gay. To be absolutely honest I had no idea who Jacqui Smith is: in my country "Jacqui" or "Jacky" is a man's name.

The socially appropriate answer to this is that they should be treated the same as any other miscreant charged with a similarly heinous crime. Murder is murder.... just because a murderer is home bred he shouldnt be accorded preferential treatment.
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Dear JFR,
The whole thing is totally out of balance. The number of people killed in road accidents in a year vastly outnumbers those killed by terrorists and yet the effort put into stopping the (supposed) terrorists outweighs that on traffic improvements by a huge factor.
I'm inclined to think that the threat from terrorists is a bit like that from Saddam Hussain's weapons of mass destruction. A threat blown up out of all proportion by those who have power and want to increase their power. For example in Bristol a 19-year old who, no doubt, was quite excessive in his adherence to his religion was taken into custody and his home made the subject of several 'controlled explosions'. If he *was* a threat (which I very much doubt) he could surely have been dealt with without the histrionics. The truth is that the government LIKES to frighten people and is anxious to get the power to put anyone they like (I mean dislike) into prison without charge for 56 days. All they have to do is say that person is a terrorist suspect.
I think in the UK she is usually spelled Jackie Smith. I know several females called Jackie.
And, of course, I wholly approve of giving the Iranian gay man asylum.
Love,
Anthony

The logic is obvious. There were only sections of gay Iranians, the ones who have been murdered and the ones who fled the country.
